Rebecca needed a maths qualification to do her apprenticeship. Having always struggled with the subject at school, taking on the exam was a daunting prospect.
But she found that Functional Skills focused more on the maths she needed at work than GCSE, and despite failing the exam first time round Rebecca persisted and finally passed with the grade she needed!
She told us: “Just working out if a customer needs a discount, or working out how much of my target I’ve reached – percentages have been a big part of those things. I definitely feel better towards maths now. Now I’ve got this pass mark I feel I actually can do it.”

Announcing the launch of our Schools & Families Programme 🎉
The UK has an inter-generational problem when it comes to low numeracy. Here are just a few alarming stats from our research:
🚨 43% of trainee teachers lack confidence or skills in maths (National Numeracy, 2023).
🚨 59% of parents find maths the toughest subject to teach their children (National Numeracy, 2021).
🚨 54% of girls and 43% of boys lack confidence in learning maths (Teach First, 2024).
Our groundbreaking new programme aims to address this by working with children, school staff, and parents. Together, we'll attempt to break the negative cycle and build confidence in numeracy!

Were you ever given 50p to spend in the tuck shop after school? 🍬
The cost of a Freddo chocolate bar has shown us how prices change over time—while 50p doesn’t go as far today, thankfully the price of a Freddo has dropped to 25p after hitting 30p in 2020! 🙏 Back in 2005, that 50p could get you 5 of these tasty treats.
How would you spend your change in the sweet shop?
This is a great way to introduce children to money (though fruit might be a healthier choice 😉). Explore over 200 fun, flexible ideas like this in the Family Maths Toolkit—all free to access! https://bit.ly/3AEMxsC
The Paris Paralympics start today! 🎉
Gold Medalist 🥇 and pundit for this year's Paralympics, Danny Crates, shared how numbers helped him train. What seemed like an unreachable goal became simpler when Danny used numbers. This is a great example of how numbers can break things down so that we don’t feel overwhelmed. This can apply at work and to our finances too.

🌞 is here, and it's time to enjoy the sun! But don't forget to protect your skin with the right SPF. Did you know you can use maths to figure out how much protection you’ll get from your sun-cream?
The calculation is:
Estimate the time it might take your skin to burn without sunscreen
Times this by the SPF eg if it would take your skin 20mins to redden in the sun without sunscreen and you properly apply cream with SPF of 30 that would mean 600mins or 10 hours of protection.
NOTE: Studies show people tend not to apply enough sun-cream to get the full protection so you’re better off picking high SPF or covering up to be safe. Also, even if you don’t tend to burn in the sun, it’s still important to wear sunscreen to stop the harmful UV.
Check out the NHS website for more advice.
Stay sun-smart and enjoy your summer safely. ☀️🧴
