The term "emotional eating" is often used as a catch-all phrase to describe any type of eating done through emotion, and can be a large reason why some feel they struggle with their relationship with food.
What I don't see talked about nearly enough however, is that not all emotional eating is inherently bad, and understanding how each type can manifest is the first step in helping people gain a sense of control back.

It's always a proud moment when we get to shout out our clients successes, but this one is extra special as over the past year I (coach Matt) got to coach my dad!
With my guidance he was able to achieve his 2 main goals:

Put on weight / muscle mass to improve his power and performance for his sport - cycling.
โ
Improve his diet and increase his calorie intake the right way to better fuel him on the bike.
Over the last year he's gone from 71kg to 80kg, with minimal increases in fat and a huge increase in his strength and energy levels - check out the back and leg development!
I'm super proud of what he's achieved, and wanted to share his results to prove 2 things.
1๏ธโฃ - You can still gain muscle even if you do an endurance sport such as cycling or running. You shouldn't always chase the "be as light as possible" mindset as having more muscle and strength will actually help your performance!
2๏ธโฃ - It's NEVER too late in life to make improvements to your health and body. My dad turns 65 this weekend and I didn't coach him any differently than I would've a client of 25. If you commit to the process you'll achieve no matter what age you are!
My dad inspired me to get into fitness when I was younger so this was a lovely way for me to give back to him.

We wanted to take this opportunity to say a sincere thank you to our amazing clients and members around the globe - without you we wouldn't be able to do what we do.

Just a reminder that like any holiday where eating is involved, your food choices today are your own and no one elseโs.
There's absolutely no 'right' or 'wrong' choice.
Eating sensibly just as if it were any other day is cool, but eating an entire easter egg and passing out in a food coma is also cool. It's also cool to be somewhere in the middle too!
What isn't cool is being shamed for your choices under the guise of 'health and fitness'
You don't need to burn off todays calories if you don't want to, but you definitely do need to burn any feelings of guilt you might have.
Besides, who, after polishing off the last bite of their Maltesers egg says " mate, the only thing that would make this day any better is a nice 7 hour walk! "

It's 2022 and this is just a reminder that the vast majority of supplements sold in 'female versions' are still just stupid cash grabs.
There is absolutely no reason why a women would need a different type of protein powder than a man. This would be like saying a women would need to eat a different type of chicken breast than a man.
Ever notice how some products get gendered for absolutely no reason?
Example : " toothbrush for women ".... because you know, sometimes you forget that men and women don't have the same kind of teeth ๐
Gendering sports nutrition supplements is the same thing, just a marketing ploy a company will come up with in order to seem diverse, whilst conveniently charging more for the product than the regular version.
Of course, men and women DO have slightly different nutritional needs, and there are some caveats where women will require different supplementation than men ( some micronutrients, pregnancy nutrition, PCOS etc ) but for your every day supplement purchases, save yourself money.

Walking is one of the most underrated and easily accessible forms of exercise we can do.
But what actually happens to our health when our activity levels drop?
Itโs pretty eye opening stuff!
The sweet spot for health would appear to be between 6000-10,000 steps per day, and hereโs what happened after just 2 weeks when steps reduced from 6000 to 1500 per day.

Gyms are always more crowded in January and while this might be frustrating, and yes not everyone will stick at it, many will!
So be patient, be welcoming and offer help to those who might need it.

Epic Christmas Bootcamp yesterday!
A powerful end to the year for our amazing clients and great to have them all in one room training hard!
A fun but tough 2 hours of lifting, hitting, jumping, running and burning some serious calories.

When it comes to health and fitness we love to create false premises to use as excuses for not improving our habits.
One of the most common ones is the all or nothing mentality.
This is the idea that if you're going to start doing something positive - eating healthier, walking more, exercising etc - if something external is stopping you doing all of it, then there's no point in doing any of it.
Never is this more common than the Christmas period.
" I can't start now, it's Christmas! "
What if instead of focussing on the small number of things that stop you from being perfect in December, you instead focus on the constant daily opportunities you have to make small improvements right now?
This is one of my favourite images to show how important it is to exercise and stay active as you age.
What you see here is the muscle and fat comparisons in the leg of a 40 year old triathlete, a 70 year old triathlete and a 74 year old sedentary man.
Unsurprisingly, the 40 year old triathlete has high muscle mass with very little fat tissue built up.
But take a look at the difference between the 70 and 74 year old!
The 74 year old's leg is being overcome with fat tissue, whist the quality of his muscle tissue has errored massively.
In comparison, staying active has kept the 70 year olds leg as strong, if not stronger 30 years later in life!
I'm not saying you need to maintain exercise as extreme as triathlons, but any form of physical activity that you enjoy and can do consistently will do wonders for your health later in life.
Don't let your body become a barrier to great life experiences in the future. Invest time in looking after it and in turn it will look after you ๐ช

We are proud to announce the newest member of the Apex Team - Coach Chris.
Chris has been working behind the scenes with us for a while and has been running some excellent classes at our facilities.
A little about Coach Chris
He started playing football as a youngster and was always active, at 18 he started to train with weights and shortly after joined the RAF Fire Service - where he took his training to the next level.
After leaving, he took his passion to the professional level becoming a PT and over the next 5 years trained in CrossFit, Powerlifting and became a certified Strength & Conditioning Coach.
Currently he plays Rugby alongside his S&C training as well as training in Boxing, and soon is to take steps into MMA training.
Chris currently works with a wide range of clients but his long term plan is to work with professional combat athletes .
We welcome Chris to the team and look forward to helping him realise his goals!
