Travelling with your neurodivergent child or
young person
Many of us may be looking forward to some
family time away this Summer. Be it by plane,
train or car, travelling with your neurodivergent
young person may require some careful planning.
The National Autistic Society state that ‘Autistic
people can find change difficult, this may lead to
high anxiety, meltdowns and distressed
behaviours.’ And ‘By preparing them for change,
you can help to reduce anxiety and stress.’

The summer holidays are fast approaching,
bringing with it the promise of (hopefully) sunny
days, adventures, and a break from the hustle
and bustle of the school year. For many of us, it's
a time to relax and let go of rigid schedules and
routines, but for our neurodivergent children, this
sudden shift may be a bit overwhelming,
especially if they thrive on predictability and
routine, and the summer months can sometimes
feel like a free-fall without the familiar structure
of school.
Don’t worry – your not alone. We are going to
think about how we can create a summer
schedule that keeps things fun and predictable
while making sure everyone gets the rest they
need.

When we think about the word 'transition,' as can
be seen from the word clouds below, this means
something different to each of us. Whether it's
the excitement of new beginnings or the
challenges of adapting to changes, transitions
shape our lives in unique ways. In this month’s
newsletter, we're diving into the world of
transitions to see how they impact our children
and young people. The dictionary states a
transition is a 'movement, passage, or change
from one position, state, stage, or activity to
another. ANY CHANGE, something that is
different.' But what does that really mean for our
children?
Throughout this newsletter, we'll break down the
ins and outs of transitions and how they affect
children and young people. We’ll look at big
moments like starting school or moving to high
school, as well as the everyday changes that are
part of their routines.
We asked a number of Neurodivergent young
people and adults the following questions about
transition.
Check out this months newsletter for more on transitions
