On Friday our Andy* will be in Wrexham delivering a workshop at the Wal Goch Festival For Football Lovers on how grassroots clubs can build their fanbase through building their community links and identifying the 'changemakers' in the community.

What better a legacy of the Cymru men's team in its first World Cup since 1958 than by growing the domestic game, but not just in terms of its size and profile but its embeddedness with Welsh communities. This will only ever be achieved via a bottom-up approach based around changemaking techniques.

We can't wait.

*Apologies in advance for all the inevitable West Ham references

Interesting to read the Wales TSPC Covid Recovery Sub-Group Report.
https://wcva.cymru/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/TSPC-Covid-Recovery-Sub-Group-Report-2.pdf

We welcome many of the policy suggestions. One observation is how the Relationships work stream (there are 3; the others are Volunteering and Support) is an interesting one but seems to concentrate its attention on those *vertical* connections between different institutions and elements of state apparatus. However, the success of some community responses to the pandemic was because of the *horizontal* connections and bonds in communities.

This is not to say that (vertical) 'linking ' is less valuable or effective than (horizontal) 'bridging social capital'. But they perform different functions:

the latter provides a strong base for the latter to pull things together at a more strategic and/or population level.

Think of it a bit like this trellis. It's sturdier for the horizontal components it has.
