✨ Pregnancy massage ✨

I am always answering enquiries about pregnancy massage and whether it is safe for both Mum and baby and the simple answer is yes! Unless you have high risk contra indications or have been advised from your Midwife or Consultant not too.

Pregnancy massage is physiological, emotional and psychological. It helps to create relaxation by stimulating receptors which send messages to help promote the balance and stabilisation of hormonal changes, which occur throughout pregnancy.

Some of the benefits are;

• Improves energy
• Increases blood flow and haemoglobin levels
• Encourages good lymphatic drainage to lower limbs thus alleviating fluid build up and reducing swelling.
• Improves venous return which can help to avoid varicose veins.
• Improves general posture and stress on weight bearing joints and musculoskeletal structures, reducing pain and discomfort.
• Soothes and relaxes the nervous system.

Perineal massage can help in preparation, by Mum, to assist with a less traumatic delivery.
It offers a safe, natural and drug free alternative as pain relief.

It improves sleep patterns and can help overall in a better pregnancy experience both for Mum and baby.

I do hope this answers any questions you have. If not just contact me and I will try to help! Hope to treat you soon Al.

As promised folks, the continuation of the topic trigger points!

It is estimated that over 75% of muscular pain can be caused by myofascial trigger points. Whether actively painful or not, as they are not just found in the primary muscle that is affected but also in the supporting muscle or the synergist which is doing the opposite action.

Depending where they are they are known to copy some serious symptoms like angina and appendicitis etc.

Some of the most common reasons causing them are pronation of the shoulders and head forward postures (upper cross syndrome). Poor standing/sitting positions (lower cross syndrome). RSI's whether work, domestic, leisure or sport related, driving or sitting for long periods and many more! You get the picture?

So what are the features of trigger points..
They are small pea sized nodules or sometimes described as knots. If more than 1 or 2 are next to each other this size may feel much larger though.

As earlier I said they may be painful or not, but generally are tender areas in tight muscles that feel a little warmer than the rest of the muscle and when moving over them feel gritty, hard and stringy under fingers. But also may not be where the client's pain is manifesting! So be aware, try not to be pain led?

So next week we will cover some trigger point therapy techniques, cheers for now and hope to treat you soon, Al.

Hi all!

As always this month's topic is Trigger point therapy. Used in combination with physical and mechanical treatments.

Did you know some very famous people have been treated with this. Like John F. Kennedy who suffered a spinal accident during his military service. The back surgery he had was not totally successful and the pain got worse!

He was introduced by a friend to Dr Janet Travell who was pioneering a new type of treatment called "myofascial trigger point therapy." She not only went on to treat him successfully but was appointed by him as his personal physician when he became president. The first woman to hold the position and one of very few civilians too!

So what is a trigger point? Painful lumps or nodules (knots) in tight bands of muscles, but these are not necessary where the pain is referred to by the person. This is a common mistake as we are drawn to the area where it hurts.

The pressure being applied to the muscle affects nerves and blood vessels along the whole muscle from its origin to its insertion so the referred pain area may not be the issue.

Next week we will look at Acute, chronic pain associated with trigger points (TP,s) their characteristics, pain mapping and treatment.

Thanks for reading and hope to treat you soon Al (Will)
