South Pelaw Community Hub
South Pelaw Community Hub has been set up to connect the people of South Pelaw together.
Feeling truly grateful for the community I belong to. Little pockets of friendship that I tuck my hands and my heart into on a weekly basis. We all need connections even if it is as simple as a cup of tea and a sewing morning, making lavander hearts. ππππ

So grateful to Dobbies in Birtley for Β£50 credit for our gardening project. We might not have won the big prize, but we've made the best use of the money (along with some extras!) and it'll make a big difference to our project.
If you'd like some free seedlings π± from our surplus so you can grow some of your own fruit and veg (we're not sure exactly what will be available yet, but we'll label them for you so it's not a complete surprise!), pop by tomorrow after 1pm to πhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/88KwnYkaESFCJrVe8?g_st=iw and take away whatever you'd like π
Happy planting! πͺ΄
Leaflets arrived today!
Little things make me happy. Fantastic that South Pelaw Community Hub are able to spread the word to more people who can come and join in the social activities we have organised. Keep an eye out for one popping through your letter box. Vx
We recently applied for the Dobbies Community Garden fund for help with our new community garden in South Pelaw. Sadly, we weren't successful this round, where we'd applied for some volunteer time and some supplies from the Dobbies store, but we are receiving a Β£50 store credit for some essentials for the garden. We're so thankful to Dobbies for this donation and will be spending it wisely! Well done to the winners at 2nd Home Childcare in Barley Mow and was lovely to meet Wardley Wombles Litter Busters in store too, who are doing great things local to them πΏπΏπΊπ·πΌ
Thanks to all who came to our meeting and AGM last night. Whilst it might not sound like the most exciting thing going on a Friday night, we chatted about everything thatβs been going on over the last year and, most excitingly, ideas for the next year. Lots in discussion for the Welcome space days, for families and for community get togethers. How does that sound? Weβre happy to consider other ideas if people have them?
There was also discussion about a 2025 Window Wander π€«ππ
After the South Pelaw Window Wander at the weekend, itβs back to normal service this week! Weβve had some new followers so thought weβd update on our usual routine of activities:
Wednesday mornings at Holyoakes Community Centre are the Welcome Space. Pop in for a cuppa and chat before 12pm. Thereβs also a local walk in conjunction with Move County Durham which is a gentle one hour walk leaving from Holyoake at 10am, followed by a cuppa and bacon sandwich and a chat!
Fridays are also a Welcome Space at Holyoake. Anyone is welcome at any time from 9am, pop by for a cuppa and chat or a board game or jigsaw. Thereβs also Indoor curling, usually starting around 9.30, followed by a seated exercise class at 11am. Youβre welcome to join in or just watch or have another cuppa. This is a lovely group who meet, chat and have a giggle. On the third Friday, we have the Pimms and Needles Silver group who meet to take part in a variety of crafts. So thatβs this Friday for that. We do need to know in advance if youβre coming for that group, but you are welcome just to show up for any of the other meets.
Also, this Friday at 6pm at Holyoake is our quarterly meeting to chat about our plans for the future. This one is our AGM as well, so a bit of money chat but nothing too onerous! Then weβll be discussing what the 2024/2025 year might look like. All are welcome to come along if you want to learn more about what we do and maybe get involved.
Round up of windows number 2! These are all so amazing as well.
Will be drawing the prize draw first thing tomorrow so please send through any last minute feedback forms tonight.
Once again, amazing thanks to all the lovely volunteers involved in the project, to Chester-le-Street CE Primary School for jumping on board so enthusiastically, and to Hayley Park from Litter Bug Crafts for her expert guidance.
Many thanks to County Durham Community Foundation for their support through funding, and to Karbon Homes for ongoing use of Holyoakes Community Centre. We're very grateful for everyone who supported this project.
Enjoy some more photos!!
Oh my word South Pelaw!!! You put on such a good show for the South Pelaw Window Wander 2024!! Overall we had 27 windows in total and we'll trickle out the photos over the next few days for you to enjoy. A massive thank you to all who made displays for this event.
Last minute requests: please share your photos on either our posts or send them in a message to us.
Finally!! If you still have a map and want to enter our prize draw for a Β£25 Miss Elephant voucher, then take a photo of it and send it to us by the end of tomorrow and we'll include you in the draw.
Who is up for a 2025 South Pelaw Window Wander?!
Many thanks to the County Durham Community Foundation for providing funds to make this project happen.
It's looking dry for tonight's South Pelaw Window Wander! Final night tonight. Who is coming along?
Share your photos of our incredible windows and use the if you do. We've not shared any really so it doesn't spoil the surprise for people coming tonight. But share yours as you wander!
Remember; collect your maps from Holyoakes Community Centre, bring your cereal boxes to make a lantern and get window wandering. Looking forward to seeing you tonight!
The entire route is accessible by car so you're welcome to drive round if walking the route isn't an option for you.
Did you make a lantern at tonight? They look super cool in the dark. Plenty of time to make one tomorrow if you're coming along.
Lovely to see so many people Holyoakes Community Centre enjoying themselves and picking up maps and crafting.
We've also realised tonight that the wander is totally accessible by car, so if walking the whole estate is a barrier then you can drive past all of the windows and enjoy from your car.
Today (and tomorrow!) is the South Pelaw Window Wander!! From 4-8pm please join us to wander the neighbourhood and spot as many decorated windows as you can!! There are 25 in total ππ here's all the info:
β Please come on foot or by public transport if possible. The 8, 78 and 34 all stop near Holyoake. If you have to bring the car, please park behind Holyoake on The Close on the Selby Cottage side as this road is quieter for resident parking.
β Stop by Holyoakes Community Centre where you can make a lovely illuminated lantern (remember your cereal boxes!!) and pick up a snack and warm drink for a small cost. Please bring cash as we have no card machine. Collect a map! Please check the up to date poster as we have 4 windows not on the map and we'd hate if you missed them π
β Get window wandering!! Enjoy all the windows and choose your favourite!!
βHead back to Holyoake to complete our survey and let us know what you think. If you do, you'll be entered into our prize draw to win a Β£25 Miss Elephant voucher. Oooooh we hear you say..... π
That's it! Hopefully see loads of you tonight and repeat tomorrow!!
Countdown : 1 day to go! So that's tomorrow!! π± The South Pelaw Window Wander is open from 4-8pm on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th February!
Have been out doing fliers today - South Pelaw has a lot of LONG front gardens πββοΈπββοΈ but also spotted another window π¦πͺ π
A reminder that if you're coming tomorrow or Saturday, please bring a cereal box (or similar) with you to do the illuminating craft Holyoakes Community Centre. We have some spare but best bring your own. You might also need a sledge π·βοΈπ
Maps will be available to collect from Holyoakes Community Centre between 4&8pm and best get a hot chocolate too - the big question is cream OR marshmallows? Or maybe you like both?!! π
Countdown : 2 days to go! The South Pelaw Window Wander is open from 4-8pm on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th February!
We're starting to see window displays popping up around the neighbourhood πͺππ have you spotted any yet?!
Getting closer to the main event this weekend! Just a little post to let you know that you can pick up warm drinks, snacks and hotdogs when you stop by Holyoakes Community Centre on Friday or Saturday night. The whole event is free (including our cereal box craft!) but we will be charging for drinks and food. We don't have a card machine, so please bring cash. Remember that The One Stop shop over the road from Holyoake has a cashpoint and More for Less will let you withdraw money via the Post Office.
The map went to print today to be back in time. You're still very welcome to join in with a window display, but you won't appear on the map now. But we can tell people where your window is when they collect a map. Send us a message if you'd like to join in.
This project is so amazing for our community.
Countdown : 4 days to go! The South Pelaw Window Wander is open from 4-8pm on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th February!
Today we're off to spend time with Chester-le-Street CE Primary School and we're very excited to work on their window with them. It's very topical, keep your eyes peeled for it emerging today!
Then we'll be in the hall after school if you still want to pick up materials or start making displays with some help. We'll be there until 5pm for families belonging to the school.
If you'd like to take part by making your own window, you've got until tonight to sign up and get some materials to get making. Just send us a message if you want to join in!
Final call for free bacon sarnies on Sunday! Would be lovely to make South Pelaw look πβ¨for the Window Wander. Meeting at 12.30 at Holyoake. Let us know you're coming so we can get enough bacon
!!!We need your help!!
Are you a Fan of Frosties? Or is Weetabix your Winner? Maybe you're a Coco Pops Cruncher or a-Mazed by Muesli? (Did you see what we did there? π)
Anyway, ahead of the South Pelaw Window Wander we need you to eat all the cereal you can and let us have the boxes π₯π₯£π¦ All will be revealed on the 9th and 10th February !!
If you could drop them off Holyoakes Community Centre on Wednesday or Friday mornings from 9-12 or on Saturday 3rd February between 10am & 12pm that would be amazing! If you can't get there, drop a comment and we'll try to swing past your place to collect.
