The reason we are seeing more nail problems in our salons today is not just due to the availability of substandard formulas on the market.

It’s a combination of outdated practices for applying and removing modern UV/LED gel products, which have advanced significantly beyond the “Shellac era.”

No matter how many moisturising components are included in your soak-off solution, the combination of :
1️⃣ regular and prolonged exposure to Acetone (since removing modern gel products takes longer),
2️⃣the frequent use and often misuse of soak-off gels, and
3️⃣ the repeated nail prep on the same surface area, will, sooner rather than later (3-6 months), expose the more vulnerable areas of the nail plate.

‼️This makes the nail plate more likely to absorb and react to the chemicals contained even in the “best nail products.”

‼️Micro detachments are tiny separations between the layers of the nail plate that occur when the bond between keratin cells is weakened by physical or chemical stress.

‼️These micro detachments can manifest as white patches or spots on the nail plate, as the separated layers reflect light differently than the intact nail, giving a white or chalky appearance.

Most importantly this initial issue can escalate and lead to further problems.

For a UV/LED gel nail enhancements to wear well and avoid damaging your clients’ natural nails, a good product formula alone isn’t enough. Although, if you see a product ingredient list that says “Acrylic acid monomer” or “ultraviolet light initiator,” slowly put it down and run away 🙈🏃‍♀️.

Back to our topic: respecting the natural nail’s anatomical needs is essential. Whether you’re working with BIAB, acrylic gel, or hard gel, it’s vital to adhere to the principles of correct nail structure. 💅

The UV gel creates a harder, less flexible surface. If the underlying nail is uneven, stress is not evenly distributed when pressure is applied (e.g., during typing or gripping objects). This can lead to increased mechanical stress on one side of the nail plate, particularly in the stress zone (near the free edge). As the nail grows out, the added weight and rigidity of the gel can pull the nail plate away from the nail bed on the side experiencing more pressure, leading to lateral onycholysis.

Here are some of the issues that can take place when the nails structure is not corrected and simply a gel overlay is done:

💅 What is this? In the nail industry, this condition often results from using an unsuitable grit of the nail file on the natural nail plate. It causes the nail to become thin, soft, and brittle, increasing the risk of splitting or breaking. 💔

💅Onychoschisis, is characterised by transverse splitting and thin scales parallel to the free edge, is more common on hands, especially the index, middle, and ring fingers.

💅 What to do: Reduce the length of the free edge, smooth out unevenness, strengthen with hard gel, and recommend plenty of cuticle oil and nail serums. Monitor and condition at every appointment.👁🔍💧

Product lifting is actually very easy to troubleshoot based on the area where the lifting or chipping occurs. Today’s let’s understand WHY gel chips at the free edge.

First, let’s look at the nature of builder gel. Originally, hard builder gel was designed for nail extensions. This type of product is inherently rigid and non-flexible, as it was intended for use directly on the nail bed and extended over forms, leaving ❗️no natural free edge❗️ exposed underneath the gel.

As the nail industry evolved and the overlay of natural nails of all lengths with soak-off gels became popular for their flexibility, the ❗️ basic principles of physics❗️often get overlooked.

Of the 2 layers (the gel and the natural nails) the natural nail remains more flexible❗️. When a free edge extends beyond 1-2 mm, it tends to absorb most of the impact where it bends. This can cause the more rigid gel coating to eventually separate from the more flexible nail beneath.

Unfortunately, prep alone can’t prevent this as it’s primarily a matter of physics; separation might occur sooner in some cases or later in others.

To minimise lifting from the free edge, here are a couple of approaches you could consider:
1. Use soak-off gels as a strengthening overlay but only on very short nails (1 to 2 mm in length).
2. Strengthen the free edge with hard gel and carefully remove 1 mm of the natural nail from beneath the enhancement.

You don’t want your gel and natural nail to be on par with one another.

You may have heard the term “architecture,” which refers to creating the correct structure of the nail plate to protect it from trauma during wear.

The correct structure ensures that the Apex is placed correctely based on the length of the Free Edge and the Stress Zone is adequately strengthened. 💪🏻

Let’s break down these two concepts:

💅 The Apex is the highest point of the enhancement and marks the beginning of the Stress Zone.

💅 The Stress Zone is found where the nail bed ends and the free edge begins. If you press down on the tip of your natural nail, you’ll notice a white line that indicates the stress zone.
