Established in 1987, ‘The Chiropractic Clinic’ in Haymarket has now been serving the public for 30 years. The Clinic was originally set up by Dr. Stuart Wight as he relocated from the family practice in Walker Street before transferring the business in 1998 to his colleague, Dr. George Haig. Located in the transport hub of Haymarket we are only a few minutes walk from a tram stop, bus stop, parking place and Haymarket train station, making it an easy place to access.

🌟 Focus on Your Posture: Let's dive into the importance of maintaining a healthy posture! 🌟

Good posture is not just about looking confident and poised, but it also plays a vital role in your overall well-being! Here are a few key benefits of maintaining proper posture:

1. Spinal Health: Good posture helps align your spine, reducing stress on the vertebrae and supporting optimal nervous system function. It can alleviate discomfort, prevent injuries, and enhance your body's ability to heal.

2. Increased Energy and Productivity: By maintaining an upright posture, you allow your lungs to expand fully, enhancing oxygen intake. This can boost your energy levels and improve focus, ultimately enhancing your productivity.

3. Enhanced Digestion: Sitting or standing with proper posture encourages healthy organ alignment, aiding in optimal digestion and preventing issues like acid reflux or constipation.

✨ Quick Tips for Better Posture ✨

1. Mindful Sitting: While sitting, ensure your feet are flat on the floor, your back is straight, and your shoulders are relaxed. Consider using a lumbar support cushion to maintain the natural curve of your lower back.

2. Stand Tall: When standing, distribute your weight evenly on both feet, engage your core muscles, and let your arms hang naturally by your sides. Avoid slouching or locking your knees.

3. Take Breaks: If you work at a desk for prolonged periods, remember to take regular breaks to stretch, walk around, and release tension in your muscles. Incorporating gentle exercises like shoulder rolls and neck stretches can be beneficial.

4. Sleep Well: Opt for a supportive mattress and pillow that maintain proper spinal alignment during sleep. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it can strain your neck and back.

💡 Remember, good posture is a habit that can be cultivated and brings lifelong benefits. Let's prioritise our spinal health and make posture a priority in our daily lives!

Hey everyone! Sorry we have been absent for a while but we thought what better time to check in than during National Work Life Week.

An increase in home working has meant an improved sense of flexibility but it has also lead to blurred lines between work life and home life. One important way to ensure you are achieving a balance is by taking regular breaks from sitting at your desk. Not only is this better for your back but research has shown that it is also better for your productivity and creativity, whilst improving efficiency and reducing the likelihood of mistakes. We suggest going for a 20 minute walk at lunchtime! If you have any other suggestions, feel free to comment below :)

We love the West End and couldn’t be prouder to be a part of the community here. I wish there was enough space to write a paragraph on each of these businesses but alas, I’ll have to keep it brief. Here are a few suggestions if you’re in the area but if you’re interested in finding out more places to go, pop us a message and I’ll point you in the right direction :) Also, if there are any small businesses I’ve missed out on (sorry), comment below and I’ll put them in the stories in weeks to come!

Bluerapa – Next door to us you’ll find the lovely Thai restaurant that is, Bluerapa, providing authentic Thai food and wonderful service for an all-round lovely experience.

Jollybotanist – An award-winning Gin Bar offering over 72 Gins and delicious food. Too many to choose from? Try them all! (We don’t recommend doing this in the one trip)

Milk – Located on Morrison Street you can pop in for a delicious breakfast or lunch, they even provide catering for offices!

Plantbae – Vegan and Vegetarian café providing those sweet treats.

Pizzageeks – Pizza Geeks on Dalry Road provides the most delicious pizzas in the best bright orange boxes. We’re getting hungry just thinking about it!

Chizurutei – Japanese fusion restaurant to die for. If you go you must try their roast duck & leek rice. It is heaven!

Themadhatter – A bar and kitchen serving yummy food and a range of craft beers and cocktails.

Pippin – Pippin is a lovely little original gift boutique that sells cards, gifts homewares and more.

Tacolibre – Owned by Mexicans, cooked by Mexicans. You can find them on Shandwick Place. Follow them on Instagram. WARNING: You will find yourself craving tacos on the daily.

What a great little area we do reside in :)

Many years ago, this was a wonderful car park used by many of our patients. Since then, we have seen it lie empty for years but things are underway now. The £350 million development, undertaken by the Qmile Group and M&G Real Estate is set to host three offices and two hotels as well as providing around 40,000 sq ft of retail space. More than this, there will be a public space for socialising and events to take place, with discussions of weekend and festive markets. The first building scheduled for delivery is 1 Haymarket Square, providing office accommodation is set to be delivered during the second quarter of 2022.

Although we are excited to see what this will do for the area, we understand there are mixed feelings surrounding the change…any thoughts? Post them below!

We can be found in Haymarket, Edinburgh, Scotland, the UK (I’ll stop) directly opposite the police station on Torphichen place.

The clinic is only a 5-minute walk from Haymarket station and even less from the closest bus stops. If approaching from the East (Princes Street direction) hop on a 3, 4, 12, 26, 31, 33 or 44 and off at Shandwick Place, if you are coming from the west, you can jump on a 3, 4, X7, 12, 25, 26, 31, 33, 44, 104 and off on West Maitland Street. (who needs trams, hey?) If driving, there is on street parking in the surrounding areas, including Palmerston Place and Grove street. Please bear in mind parking is metred. Finally, the tram does stop both outside Haymarket Station and on Shandwick place, both are a 5-minute walk from the clinic.

Keep your eyes peeled for more info on the area from us this week. (Although I think we may have peaked with our knowledge of bus numbers) See you soon!

So, what will happen when you come to visit the clinic? Well, first you will need a consultation. The purpose of this initial consultation is to diagnose your problem and see if there is a good chance of helping you. During the initial consultation, a full case history is taken to understand your individual problem. As well as this, a careful examination of the area that is giving you trouble and any other area that may be relevant is then made. (Often the source of your problem can lie somewhere other than the site of your pain).

The examination will vary according to your particular problem and X-rays or MRI may be recommended if visual information on the condition of your spine is required. X-ray facilities are available at the clinic.

If your condition is amenable to care, the chiropractor will work out a suitable treatment regime tailored to your specific needs. This will be discussed with you in a report of findings and, if you are happy to commence, a course of treatment will be initiated.

Note: If your problem is particularly straight forward the chiropractor may at their discretion treat you on your initial visit. More commonly, or if X-rays are necessary, this takes place on your second visit.

So, there you go! This week we’ve covered what chiropractic is, what we treat and what will happen. If you still have more questions, then get in touch through messenger. Next week we’ll be focussing on the ‘where?’ We’ll be looking at how to find us, news on the area and other local surrounding businesses you might be interested in discovering. See you then!

16/06/2021

What do we treat? Well, around half of all patients who consult our clinic do so because of back pain, with head and neck pain being the next most common areas of complaint. Pain felt in other parts of the body but originating from the spine is also treated. This includes leg pain such as sciatica or similar types of shoulder and arm pain.

Non-spinal problems such as tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and lower limb problems of the hip, knee, ankle, or foot are also part of our daily work.

Disorders of the spine can often upset the autonomic nervous system and various problems that do not appear to be related to the spine can develop. It is therefore not unusual for patients to report improvement in seemingly unrelated systemic problems after treatment.

For any more questions, feel free to pop us a message. Next up we’ll be telling you a bit about what will happen when you visit the clinic. See you soon!

14/06/2021

So, what is Chiropractic? Well, Chiropractic is an independent branch of medicine which specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly those associated with the spine and their effects on the nervous system.

Since much ill health can stem from a compromise to the nervous system, many conditions as well as back pain can be successfully treated with chiropractic care.

A Chiropractor carries out treatment through specific adjustments to joints in the spine or other parts of the body but will include soft tissue work, trigger point therapy and other modalities as required. Advice is also commonly given to promote good health and complement care.

To find out more information on what we treat and what will happen keep your eyes peeled to this page, or if you can’t wait until then, you can visit our website, www.thechiropracticclinic.co.uk!

Hello! I am Dominique and this is my mum Sevi 🙂 (I’ll let you guess who is who) We, along with Dr Haig, make up the team here at the Chiropractic Clinic.

Sevi is a proud Melbournian who has worked at the Chiropractic Clinic for over 20 years on reception. She has also provided massage therapy at the clinic and is always on hand to help in any way possible. So, if you hear an Australian accent on the end of the phone, you know who it is!

Dominique (me, hi!) is a practice manager and secretary at the clinic who is responsible for creating and running the clinic’s social media pages and website. If ever you need to get in contact via our social pages, it’ll be me on the other end, so feel free to say hello or fire any questions my way 🙂 As well as my work at the clinic, I have acted on stage and screen for years. I have just completed an HNC in business at Edinburgh College and will begin university in September to study Business Administration.

That’s the introductions done 🙂 If you have any more questions for us comment below, or if Danny Boyle happens to be reading this, I’m available for filming immediately! Next week, we’ll be looking at what Chiropractic is, what we treat and what will happen. See you then!

We are pleased to introduce you to Dr George Haig, our Chiropractor. Dr Haig is a former President of the Scottish Chiropractic Association and is a fellow of the British Chiropractic Association. (If you’re really keen you can find a full list of his credentials on our website, www.thechiropracticclinic.co.uk).

Dr George Haig took over management of the practice in 1998 from Dr Stuart Wight, working closely with him for several years before his retirement. Many of Dr Stuart Wight’s patients still attend the clinic today, with some boasting 50 years of commitment to their health! So let’s find out a little more about him.

Dr Haig is a motorbike enthusiast, family man and a keen traveller (or so he hopes to be when he retires). He is committed to his work at the clinic having entered the profession with one goal, to help people. This was sparked by an occasion in which he himself needed chiropractic care. After experiencing the power of Chiropractic first-hand, he decided to pursue this career path and hasn’t looked back since, with the same passion for the job as he had all those years ago!

In the coming days we will be introducing you to the other members of the family and Chiropractic team so keep your eyes to find out more :)

07/06/2021

Hey there! We at the Chiropractic Clinic thought it was about time to properly introduce ourselves. So, over the next few weeks we will be telling you a bit about who we are, what we are and where we are :)

“Dr Stuart Wight & Associates” is proud to be a family run practice. The clinic is one of Edinburgh’s longest established having been originally founded in 1987 by Dr Stuart Wight. Ownership has since been taken over by Dr George Haig (who we look forward to introducing you to in the coming days). Dr Haig worked with Dr Wight before his retirement and continues to be the owner and head Chiropractor of the clinic we see today.

Keep your eyes peeled to find out more over the coming weeks but until then feel free to pop us a message if you have any Chiro based questions or even just to say hey :) Happy Monday!

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and we wanted to highlight a study of 20,000 people conducted by the European Centre for Environment & Human Health at the University of Exeter, which found that people who spent at least two hours a week in green spaces - local parks or other natural environments - were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less than 120 minutes in nature no matter the person’s age, gender, ethnicity or ability level.

The study also suggested that it didn’t matter whether the 2 hours was achieved through a single outing or over several shorter outings so if you don’t have time for a 2 hour stroll why not break it up into an hour each day over the weekend or less than 20 minutes a day!

Let’s get back to nature 😊🌱
