AWP recently came 3rd in Cycle September against other similar-sized consultancies in the UK! 🚴‍♂️

Cycle September is an annual campaign aimed at promoting cycling, which involves a range of competitions where businesses can compete against each other. AWP saw a great turnout, with over 280 rides and a total distance of 1,760 miles. That’s further than cycling between Exeter and Rome!

We had several members of staff who started cycling during September having not ridden since childhood, and we almost tripled our score compared to last year. In total, we saved around 365 lb of CO2!

A number of events were organised during September to encourage staff to cycle. This included a charity ride along the River Exe to the Turf Locks pub and a free breakfast for anyone who travelling in without a car on World Car Free Day. We had an internal leaderboard between teams, with Team Dan just pipping Team Transport for the top position! Also well done to Daisy for winning the individual prize.

Cycle September is just one part of AWP’s Staff Travel Plan, which covers a wide range of measures to encourage staff to travel using sustainable modes of transport, including events, route planning, cycle parking, a shower and a drying cabinet.

Well done to all who took part and we look forward to competing again next year!

⛳️ Longest Day Golf Challenge ⛳️

Tomorrow, our team member Jake Richards is taking on the challenge of playing 72 holes of golf in one day, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The 4 rounds of golf will take approximately 16 hours and involve about 50,000 steps, which is equivalent to roughly 20 miles! Jake will be playing with 3 friends, supporting each other every step of the way.

Macmillan is a fantastic charity that provides vital physical, financial and emotional support to people living with cancer. Each player has lost much loved family members and friends to cancer related illnesses so they’d like to do their bit and help raise a significant amount of money to make a real difference.

The guys have set themselves a target for fundraising of £750, but would love to go above and beyond this for such a worthy cause. AWP have donated to the team as part of their Q2 charitable giving scheme, and we are looking forward to seeing how they get on!

Please donate whatever you can, big or small, it would be much appreciated. Good luck Jake!

Project Update! 👇

AWP were commissioned by the Duchy of Cornwall in 2020 to provide engineering support, design and co-ordination for the new commercial development ‘Kew An Lergh’ within the heart of their Nansledan development.

The construction of Kew An Lergh has been recently completed and formally opened by his Majesty King Charles III on the 13th July 2023.

The commercial development has already been welcoming its occupiers and is fully leased by creative media companies, artisan shops, a nature focussed nursery school, and soon to be new café and wellness studio.

Kew An Lergh borders the Newquay Strategic Route which is on target to be completed late summer 2024, forming the main route through Nansledan’s planned Market Street, a new High Street for Cornwall, which we are also supporting.

Kew An Lergh forms part of our ongoing development wide commission to provide engineering support, master planning, and design co-ordination for the Duchy of Cornwall’s new sustainable Cornish community. Nansledan is a 540-acre extension to the seaside town of Newquay. Upon completion the new community will consist of approximately 4,000 homes, a range of shops, cafes, restaurants, offices and leisure facilities arranged around walkable neighbourhoods.

We provided input on constraints and opportunities from the early stages of design development for Kew An Lergh and its surrounding infrastructure, informing the masterplan to navigate the levels, parking provision, building access points, drainage and services in the most sustainable fashion, whilst incorporating landscaping and lighting. Our team prepared the formal highways and levels designs, a CEMP and preliminary drainage design for approval under the ‘Local Development Order’ (LDO), and also secured a swift drainage consent through Cornwall Councils Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA).

Post LDO approval we continued our input through detailed design and construction, securing the Section 38 and Section 104 approvals for the highway and sewers.

AWP supported the construction team throughout the build on service provision, meter placements, a new substation and the ground source heat pump network, reviewing and co-ordinating the 16 bore holes (each 130m deep), pipe network and manifold positions to co-exist with the other underground services/drainage and landscaping. (The ground source heat pumps are predicted to reduce annual carbon emissions by around 84% compared with traditional gas boilers!).

It’s been a pleasure supporting this commercial development through to fruition and great to see its already bringing joy to the local community.

We look forward to enjoying the artisan shops and café on our next visit...!

Congratulations to our Assistant Technician, Jack Taylor, for winning Construction Technical & Professional Apprentice of the Year 2023! 🎉

We had a great evening on Friday at Winslade Park where the Exeter College Apprentice & Employer Awards ceremony was held and Jack was announced winner.

Jack began his apprenticeship in 2021 and will next year complete his Civil Engineering Technician Level 4 qualification. Jack says, “I’m very happy to receive this award. Thank you to Exeter College for providing me with a high standard of teaching. I look forward to completing my final year!”

We’re incredibly proud of Jack and this win is a real testament to the hard work he’s put in over the last few years.

AWP were also highly commended in the Small Employer of the Year category.

Thank you to Exeter College Exeter Apprentices and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with you.

Q2 Charity Donations 29/06/2023

As part of our quarterly Charitable Giving Scheme, Dan’s Team have chosen to use the fund of £1500 to support YMCA Exeter, BCHA, RNLI and Macmillan.

YMCA Exeter are committed to the wellbeing of the young lives in the communities of Exeter, supporting people’s physical, psychological and spiritual needs including finding accommodation, addressing addictions, mental health, employment, education and much more.

BCHA are a South West based charitable housing association with a continuing mission to meet housing need and end homelessness. With their Exeter based homeless hostel, Gabriel House, under threat of closure, the number of people rough sleeping in Devon is at risk of increasing.

The RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews saved 389 lives in 2022. Thousands of people get themselves into danger by the water and summer is an especially busy time for the RNLI.

Macmillan Cancer Support are organising a golf marathon challenge which AWP will enter a team into this summer. Any extra money we raise through this event will go towards supporting people living with cancer and their loved ones.

As part of our events to celebrate Pride Month, we held an ‘Eat the Rainbow’ 🌈 Pride Lunch in the office to coincide with the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 28th, 1969. Everyone was asked to bring in some food to share, with bonus points awarded for anything rainbow themed! Not only were we able to celebrate Pride and enjoy some very tasty food, but we raised £270 for our chosen Pride Charity, Proud2Be.

The Stonewall Riots are largely recognised as being the catalyst event which transformed the gay rights movement in the United States and across the globe. In an era of illegal gay bars, widespread homophobia and oppression, the events of the night of June 28th 1969 started as a response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City. More protests erupted over the following days, with residents of the Village organising activist groups demanding the right to live openly without fear of being arrested.

A year after the riots, the first gay pride marches were held across the United States. Within a few years, gay rights organisations were established across the world, with June now being permanently recognised as Pride Month.

Whilst we are lucky to live in a society where there is a much wider acceptance of LGBTQ+ people, there is still a long way to go before global acceptance is a reality. Homosexuality is still illegal in many countries around the world, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are still persecuted and harmed on a daily basis. We are therefore extremely thankful to organisations like Proud2Be who seek to end discrimination and support LGBTQ+ people to be their true selves.

At AWP we have marked Pride Month not only with today’s lunch, but have been spotlighting key themes and figures each week on our staff noticeboard and intranet, and last Friday we were joined by Max Price, co-founder of Proud2Be, who talked to us about the charity and answered questions from around the office.

We are over the moon to announce as one of our gold sponsors at the Exeter College Apprentice & Employer Awards 2023 taking place on Friday the 30th June.

Annabel Harris and Fionah Mazvita Mukondwa (GMICE) representing Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at the 'Engineering Her Future' event for 'Women in STEM Day' on Friday.

Thank you Tamar Crossings for hosting a great event!

23/06/2023

It's International Women in Engineering Day!

As part of this year’s International Women in Engineering Day activities, Principal Engineer, Annabel Harris is attending the “Engineering Her Future” STEM event representing both AWP and the Institution of Civil Engineers today in Plymouth.

Attending these types of events is important to AWP, as it provides the opportunity to encourage more young women to consider future careers in STEM sectors and helping to address the gender balance in what has historically been a male dominated construction industry.

We appreciate all women in engineering today and every day! Annabel Harris, Daisy Atkin, Fleur Elliott-Davies, Cat Grindle, Verity Saunders, Letisha Blackmore.
