Today is one of the four great Buddha Days, Chokhor Duchen. Chokhor Duchen (Festival of Turning the Wheel of Dharma), celebrates the day the Buddha first taught the dharma (teachings) at the deer park in Sarnath, near the ancient city of Varanasi, 49 days after the Buddha's demonstration of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

The Buddha explained the Four Noble Truths (the truth of suffering and its cause and the truth of liberation from suffering and its cause) to the five ascetics who had been his companions during his six-years of extreme asceticism. Even the deer in the park were able to receive teachings from the Buddha at the same time.
On Chokor Duchen, as on all four of the great days of the Buddhist year, prayers and offerings are made to the Buddha himself, accompanied by the 16 Great Elders. This practice is particularly efficacious not only for the continuing spread of Buddha's teachings throughout the world, but also for the life of the precious teachers remaining stable. We'll recite these together at Sakya Buddhist Centre Bristol this evening.

The picture is of the roof of Karma Thinley Rinpoche's temple in Nangchen East Tibet, called Thegchen Chokhor Ling. The dharma wheel and two deer on the roof is a reminder of Chokhor Duchen, and also signifies that in this place the buddhadharma is preserved, taught and practised.

WEDNESDAY MORNING MEDITATION GROUP
NORTHAM HALL 11:00 -12:00
All welcome!
From April 3 for 12 weeks we will reflect and meditate on a famous Tibetan Buddhist teaching text:
‘Atisha’s Jewel Rosary of a Bodhisattva’
The style of ‘Atisha’s Jewel Rosary’ is like a compendium of profound advice, like a rosary strings together many beads, here are strung together many pieces of direct heart instruction. In this text there are no complex explanations on emptiness or the procedures of meditation, but rather it’s a text useful for every level of practitioner.

Exploring the Buddha’s teachings : Dharma to Live By
The Jewel Rosary of Atisha is a short but a comprehensive compendium of advice on how to practise Buddhism genuinely and effectively-as something to live. Its open and simple approach makes the meaning of its contents unmistakable. It embodies a very direct heart instruction; without very complex explanations on emptiness or meditation procedures.

Meditation Day: “Parting from the Four Attachments”
Saturday March 2nd 10.30 to 4.30
Friends Meeting House, Exeter, Devon, EX2 4HU
“Parting from the Four Attachments”, or Zhenpa Zhidral in Tibetan, is a four line teaching that originates with one of the five great masters of the Sakya tradition, Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, who received it from the bodhisattva Manjusri, the very embodiment of wisdom.
This teaching highlights the four main kinds of attachment, from the more obvious to the more subtle, which are obstacles to realising the qualities of wisdom and compassion which are in fact our Buddha nature. The commentaries indicate the remedies to these attachments.
Outlining a clear path, it shows us where to begin from in dharma and what teachings to practise; it also demonstrates how the Mahayana teachings are embodied in the framework outlined by these four lines.

To lead the day we are very pleased to welcome back David Armstrong, a long-standing student of Lama Jampa Thaye.
David will spend the day working through this teaching in four sessions. There will be an opportunity to contemplate them in meditation and also ask questions.

Please arrive by 10.15am for a 10.30am start and bring food for lunch (to share if you wish)
