Stop walking through the world looking for confirmation that you don’t belong. You will always find it because you’ve made that your mission. Stop scouring people’s faces for evidence that you’re not enough. You will always find it because you’ve made that your goal. True belonging and self-worth are not goods; we don’t negotiate their value with the world. The truth about who we are lives in our hearts. Our call to courage is to protect our wild heart against constant evaluation, especially our own. No one belongs here more than you. ~Brené Brown

Emily Dickinson 💔

''If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.''

Love this from Nate Postlethwait 💚

When that inner critic starts talking at you, pause and ask yourself "who's voice is this?" 💚

As with most things learnt in childhood (not just from parents but all caregivers and primary role models), we can unlearn them 💚

Parents and caregivers- if this is what you’re seeing at home, keep doing what you’re doing.

But don’t panic if your children don’t do this. Start with recognizing times you might have hurt their feelings, approach your child about it, and apologize. Then, when we notice patterns--such as yelling or criticizing our children-- we begin implanting strategies to regulate ourselves and not repeat patterns.

A child who is distressed, whether they’re whining or crying, has a need that is not being met.

We frame that however we would like- but the more room we give their feelings and we start decoding the behaviour and seeing underneath it. This is needs that are not being met. The sooner we can intervene appropriately, the less room that emotion is going to take.

Children who have experienced trauma, experience a disconnection from themselves from the world. They learn that the world is harsh disregarding, and painful. They learn to protect themselves from others instead of connecting. These children need predictability, consistency, and most importantly, love to heal-- not more pain.

A child's "talking back" or "bad attitude" is not indicative of their lack of respect.
🌅
A child can deeply love and revere their family and simply be expressing their overwhelming feelings or beliefs which would not seem so overwhelming if they felt free to share.
🌅
When we take attitudes personally we miss out on the opportunity to grow and to help our children grow.
🌅
Seeking to understand objectively and empathize sincerely is a vital skill to sustain healthy relationships.
🌅
When we model how to share our opinions and feelings respectfully our children learn how to do the same.
🌅
Learning how to communicate respectfully requires a good example, practice, and maturity.

Conscious Communication may look something like this:

🔸Be present! Put down your phone or whatever you're doing so you can focus.

🔸Breathe slowly.

🔸Listen. Truly listen.

🔸Look for an unmet need, unheard feeling, or limiting belief beneath the behavior. (behind your child's and your trigger)

🔸Sincerely care. Empathize and Validate. With yourself internally and your child externally.

🔸If you feel calm communicate your feeling, need, or request clearly without using threats, shame, blame, or criticism.

🔸If you don't feel calm, ask to have some time to think. [🔸Connect to yourself. It’s good to feel all your emotions & validate them for yourself. 🔸 When reconnected to yourself go and help your child do the same.]

🔸Reconnect with your child. Find time to be together (Play, read, walk, create a meal or artwork together....anything you will both enjoy)

✨Most of the time connection replaces the need for correction.✨

🔸 When your child and you are both regulated you can problem-solve together.
(This may mean you change your mind now that you have a better understanding but it doesn't mean going against your core values or intuition. Hold your boundary empathetically.)

🧡 Lelia.
