We all had a fantastic time at Our Wooden Spoon Golf Day which took place at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club last week with 19 teams taking part. Congratulations to the winning team PIB Insurance!!

Everyone was thoroughly entertained during the evening by the brilliant Josh Daniels Comedian and over £3,000 was raised on the day, all of which will be invested in a local project supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped to make the event such a success.

The official opening of Lancashire Wooden Spoon’s latest project hast recently taken place at Devonshire Primary Academy in Blackpool. Early years pupils will now have the luxury of doing various outdoor activities and learning (normally thwarted by our wet and windy weather), under their gigantic covered Wooden Spoon canopy.

This was a project which the school, operating in one of the most deprived areas of Blackpool, would otherwise not have been able to fund.

The ribbon was cut by Lancashire Wooden Spoon’s Honorary President, former England and British & Irish Lions captain and Chairman of World Rugby, Sir Bill Beaumont. Former England Women’s Rugby Union captain Gill Burns MBE was also there to lend her support.

Devonshire Primary Academy’s headteacher, Dan Simm said, “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Wooden Spoon who have gone out of their way to show such an interest and understanding of our school. We are also delighted that so many Wooden Spoon representatives were able to attend our opening ceremony.”

Early Years Lead, Alison Guest added, “Without the generosity of Wooden Spoon we would not have this marvelous canopy. To say it has made a difference to our children would be an understatement.”

Martin Long, Chairman of Wooden Spoon Lancashire said, “When we received a request for funding it was clear that it had met our criteria, it was a pleasure working with the school on this project and on the day it was lovely to see all the smiling faces of the young children who will benefit from the canopy.”

Wooden Spoon recently celebrated its 40th Birthday with a reception at the House of Lords hosted by Lord Hayward OBE and we were honoured by the presence of our patron HRH, The Princess Royal.

The Princess Royal spent time talking to the guests before making an inspiring speech celebrating Wooden Spoon's achievements over the last 40 years.

At the event, Maddie Marsden representing the Boathouse Youth in Blackpool, was presented with a Wooden Spoon award in recognition of her voluntary work and for speaking at our events over the last year. She was also able to speak to The Princess Royal and it was the culmination of a marvellous year for Maddie.

We are now into our 3rd year of sponsoring the Wooden Spoon Multi-Sports Holiday Camps in partnership with Fylde Rugby Community Foundation at Fylde Rugby Football Club

We provide transport and meals during the day to children from deprived backgrounds and to those that might find school challenging. It gives these children a positive activity to engage in during the school holidays, at a time which can be lonely and isolating.

They have the opportunity to make friends, developed new skills, and increased their confidence and self-esteem. The recent Easter camps saw over 315 children (our initial target) attend with the May half term and Summer Camps ahead of us.

It's been an absolute privilege for Wooden Spoon to work in partnership with the Fylde Rugby Community Foundation on this project.

We recently raised £10,500 for the Outlook Trust to replace their boat which was severely damaged in a storm. The Outlook Trust is a charity that organises and provides residential breaks and outdoor activities for blind and visually impaired children, providing them with experiences that fully sighted children take for granted.

The boat has been named ‘Out on the Full’, in the spirit of rugby and Wooden Spoon, and will soon be appearing regularly on Lake Windermere. The name complements its sister boat, ‘Out for a Duck’ which was supported by a cricket charity.

Thank you to all our supporters for enabling us to fund this project and a particular big thank you to Shaun Bennett and Links Signs and Graphics Ltd for doing a brilliant job with the decals at no cost to the charity.

Wooden Spoon Lancashire recently held another successful joint fundraising event with Fylde Rugby Football Club, when £12,000 was raised, every penny of which will go towards local projects supporting vulnerable children and young people.

The guest speaker was Rob Henderson, the former Ireland and British & Irish Lions centre, who did an absolutely fantastic job entertaining the guests all afternoon. Comedian Phil Walker was also on top form. Phill Mills, Manager of the Fylde Rugby Community Foundation started the afternoon talking about the great work that the Foundation was doing with the support of Wooden Spoon particularly with children from the more deprived areas of the Fylde Coast. He was ably supported by two 8-year-olds who were taking part in a Wooden Spoon Sports Camp at the Club that day.

There was a sprinkling of rugby and football greats in the room including Sir Bill Beaumont, Malcolm Phillips, Derek Parlane and Peter Reid. Our Chairman Martin Long would also like to thank Mark Cadley for organising the day, event sponsors Ormrods Solicitors and Simpson Judge Ltd - Specialist Recruitment and everyone who attended and supported the Wooden Spoon Charity.

We’re delighted that we were able to donate £2,000 to Blackpool Food Bank this month. This amazing charity will supply around 2400 meals and support so many children, individuals and families in our local community who are experiencing food insecurity during the cost of living crisis. Here’s our Martin Long (middle) with Neil Reid, Blackpool Foodbank Chairman and CEO Bev Lucas.

"Blackpool Foodbank provide an essential service in one of the most deprived towns in the UK so it has been a pleasure to be able to help them support so many families living in food poverty." Martin Long
