The Samantha Dickson Fund
Raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity in Samantha's name. Samantha had an incredible zest for life. Our world was turned upside down.
She was a bright, lively, happy, fun-loving girl, who enjoyed school, music, drama, sports, badminton, netball, lacrosse, swimming, ballet, modern & tap dancing, travel and skiing. She played the flute and piano and was a dedicated scholar, working for distinction in all her exams. It was a pleasure to attend Parent’s Evening and hear praise from all her teachers. Posted • 2023 might nearly be over, but we’re thrilled to share one last piece of good news for the year. The Charity’s founders, Neil and Angela Dickson, have been awarded OBEs in the New Year’s Honours in recognition for their dedication in establishing the world’s largest brain tumour charity.
Their daughter, Samantha, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and tragically died in 1996 aged just 16. Following Samantha’s death, the Dickson’s raised £20,000 in donations at Samantha’s funeral to be used in research into brain tumours. When they investigated how best to spend the money, Neil and Angela were amazed to find there was no dedicated brain tumour charity in the UK. They decided to set up the Samantha Dickson Research Trust, which was later renamed to The Brain Tumour Charity, to fund research and provide support to those with brain tumours affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.
About the announcement, Neil said: “Angela and I are delighted to receive OBEs in the New Year Honours list. We have worked tirelessly over the last 26 years to increase research and provide support services for patients and families diagnosed with this devastating disease. “
“These awards are also a big thank you to the brain tumour community in the UK who have united to make such a difference.“
A huge congratulations to Neil and Angela from everyone here at The Charity. We’re forever inspired by their contribution and determination to bring hope to everyone affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.

Neil Dickson MBE, Founder of The Brain Tumour Charity and Vice Chairmen of Trustees:
“Angela and I were delighted that Samantha’s Fund is able to support Dr Ola Rominiyi’s research at the University of Sheffield.
“It was about 20 years ago when we awarded one of the first grants made by The Charity to the University of Sheffield. So it really feels that we have come full circle.
“This research into glioblastoma was one of six projects awarded in our Future Leaders programme. And scored highly in our peer review process.
“We are now able to go back to our family, friends, and supporters in North Hampshire and Surrey to tell them the money they raised is already being put to good use and is making such a difference.
“We’d would also like to thank the McIntosh family who recently lost their father John to a glioblastoma. Their tireless work in raising money has meant we have been able to fund ground-breaking research much quicker than planned. We have a number of people diagnosed with high grade-glioma who are also raising money for The Samantha Dickson Fund. In particular Sophie and her husband Bruce Pemberton – their support shows a united effort really makes a difference in fighting this disease.”

🎉ANNOUNCEMENT🎉
Thanks to your generous support, local fundraisers and community efforts we are delighted to announce that the dedicated Samantha Dickson Fund has already passed the £100,000 mark!
This is sooner than we could have ever hoped and means we should be able to commission new research this September.
This research will be into high grade glioma, the tumour type that Samantha had. Despite making major advances in the understanding of these tumours we have yet to translate this into new clinical treatments.
The purpose of our fund is to kickstart this process.
During our 25 years of fighting this disease, Angela and I know what a difference this money when targeted can make.
