Like any job, your first day on site as a can be a little overwhelming. You have remembered some of your colleagues’ names, and where the toilets are, and you are coming to terms with the fact that the commute to work took a lot longer than it did when you went there first for the interview. That, my friend, is completely normal.
What is also normal is to feel a little bit unprepared for your role as a Site Engineer. Particularly, if this is your first job as a Site Engineer, it has suddenly all become rather real!
As a newbie, you have the licence and excuse to ask lots of questions. Try to get in all the embarrassing ones in the first few weeks and certainly most of the technical ones by the first three months. I promise you that your colleagues would rather you ask these questions sooner rather than later then blunder on, not really knowing what you are doing, as that can make other members of the team look bad.
Of course, if you are reading this post, you now have a magic card up your sleeve. If you really would like some help with the practical or theoretical part of your job as a Site Engineer and even have background support from our team of experienced Engineers to help you with any difficulties you have, then head on over to our membership area.

Our Founder, Saffron Grant, wanted every Site Engineer in the UK to have access to the information they need to carry out their job to the best of their ability. To try and make vital information available to a greater number of people than she could reach with training, she wrote ‘Setting Out For Construction; A Practical Guide to Site Surveying’. We have had brilliant feedback about this book, including that it is the ‘setting out Bible’ and that it is ‘life-changing for Engineers’!
Practical Guide to Site Surveying: Setting Out for Construction: A practical guide to site surveying | Setting Out For Construction The most useful and easy to follow book ever written about setting out, the book addresses the most common problems encountered by engineers on site.
We achieved a lifetime FIRST for Setting Out for Construction a few weeks ago when we trained Winvic Construction’s cohort of Civil Engineering, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying apprentices. This was the first time ever we have had more than 50% women on our 5-day course!
We are fully booked for in-house training for the remainder of 2023. If you would like to secure dates for 2024, please get in touch. Email [email protected] to enquire.
One of our 5-day setting out course delegates recently emailed us to ask for a recap on setting out 90-degree angles using a Total Station. We made them a video, so we thought we might as well share it with our LinkedIn audience.
What other topics would you like us to share videos on?
Quick quiz!
What angular closing error did the Winvic Construction apprentices achieve when they completed the traverse practical exercise on our 5-day setting out course in levelling and Total Station a few weeks ago? Bonus points if you can get the distance misclosure.
If you’d really like to get into the nuts and bolts of setting up primary control points from scratch on a new site, book onto one of our upcoming 5-day setting out courses:
- 23rd – 27th October, GLASGOW (FULLY BOOKED)
- 20th – 24th November, WARRINGTON (Places available)
- 4th – 8th December, GLASGOW (Places available)
- 4th – 8th December, LONDON (Places available)

Not sure if our 5-day Setting Out course in Levelling and Total Station would be right for you? We asked some of the delegates on our recent London course what they thought was most useful about the course. Take a look at the video to see what they said.
We are almost fully booked up for the remainder of 2023, so book as soon as you can if you would like to learn about good practice in levelling, taping, and Total Station, checking your equipment is working correctly, setting up horizontal and vertical control points on a new site, measuring and setting out levels, staking out points with coordinates and much more.

What non-technical advice would you give to new who are just starting out in their career?
On our CITB Assured, Setting Out For Construction courses, we don’t just teach the maths, theory and practical aspects of setting out, but also the importance of taking ownership of your work, that you shouldn’t blindly trust the information other engineers have given you, and that the best site engineers, at every level, proactively seek relevant information about tolerances and equipment acceptance criteria.
Our next 5-day course is in Warrington on 4-8th September.

We had a brilliant week last week with Construction Ltd Year in Industry students. Many companies put all their Graduate Engineers through our CITB Assured 5 day Setting Out course, but Winvic are ahead of the game! By putting their Year in Industry students through the training, it means when they graduate the following year, they are already up to speed in this area. It also means they are able to apply their practical experience to the context of their final year studies and will feel more supported and valued by their employer.

Modelling and mapping are becoming increasingly important for construction companies. These technologies can help to improve the productivity, efficiency, safety, and accuracy of construction projects.
Data from drone mapping or laser scanning can imported into modelling and mapping software and significantly improve the accuracy of site measurements and reduce the risk of human error in measurement taking.
It should come as no surprise then that our 2-day 3D Modelling and Mapping for Site Engineers courses is often oversubscribed and sold-out weeks in advance.
Don’t miss the opportunity to bring the benefits of modelling and mapping capabilities to your business.
