Members of East Riding Libraries can now borrow blood pressure monitors as well as books as part of a new scheme.
All libraries and mobile libraries in the East Riding now have blood pressure monitors available for members to borrow for free for up to two weeks, allowing residents to monitor their blood pressure from the comfort of their own homes, as well as easing some burdens on GP surgeries in the area.

The sun has finally decided to make an appearance and is showing off the town’s hanging baskets and planters beautifully.
Each year Howden Town Council arranges and pays for these wonderful displays which I hope you agree do the town justice.
This year Helliwell Horticulture won the tender again after many years supplying our displays.
They do a sterling job preparing them, installing them and then out watering them all summer making sure they prosper throughout the summer months 🌺
🌍 Celebrating Changing Places Awareness Day and the 1st anniversary of Howden's super loo! 💫🚽
Today is Changing Places Awareness Day 2024! 🎉 It’s a day dedicated to making a noise about what Changing Places toilets are and why they are so important.
The Changing Places UK campaign was officially launched in July 2006, and in celebration, the Consortium decided to make July 19th an annual awareness day for the campaign. These specialised toilets are designed to meet the needs of people with severe disabilities who require extra space, hoists, and changing benches. They make a life-changing difference for individuals and their families, not only in the UK but around the world.
Howden Town Council is proud to offer this facility as they continue to improve accessibility around Howden
The spacious facility includes a ceiling track hoist, grab rails, peninsular toilet, height adjustable washbasin, a shower and a wall-mounted adult-sized changing bench, enabling those with serious impairments to get out and about and enjoy the day-to-day activities many take for granted.
Located on Charles Briggs Avenue, DN14 7SX, the Changing Places toilet is accessible every day from 6am – 6pm.
WE’VE WON A NATIONAL AWARD !!
Howden Town Council is delighted to announce that after months of hard work and planning we received the letter to tell us we have achieved Foundation Award status in the prestigious Local Council Award Scheme.
This achievement recognises that the council achieves good practice in governance, community engagement and council improvement , all while going beyond our legal obligations and continuously seeking opportunities to improve and develop even further.
The Award Scheme report highlighted the council’s particular areas of strength, including our comprehensive policies, transparency, financial arrangements, website and community engagement.
Howden is the only Town Council in the whole of the East Riding of Yorkshire to have currently achieved this award which makes this achievement all the more special.
Howden Town Council’s Chief Officer and Finance Officer Sarah Boggitt said: ‘this is a huge achievement and is testament to all the hard work behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed. This also coincides with celebrating my fourth anniversary at the Town Council in which time we have taken huge strides forwards and I hope this award helps people recognise the dedication instilled within the Council to fulfil all our legal obligations and good governance. This is in addition to me achieving my CiLCA Local Government qualification in 2022 and also recently winning the national New Clerk of the Year award. It’s been a busy four years, moving forwards all the time and with big changes coming to Howden in the coming years, a perfect time to have this great foundation and look forwards to how we can keep improving our offer to the local community. Thank you to our small team of staff and councillors for enabling this to be achieved’ …
The celebration letter is attached below ...
Good news before the weekend. After many months working with, and meeting with Yorkshire Water and other relevant agencies to look at the issues Howden has been facing in recent times, we have just received the following good news from them and I'm happy to be able to share this with you now:
Yorkshire Water will shortly be starting a £5.1 million investment scheme in Howden and Howdendyke.
The scheme will involve installing 3 kilometres of new raising main between Howden Broad Lane Sewage Pumping Station, which is located off Boothferry Road, and Howden Sewage Treatment Works at Howdendyke. The new pipe will be directionally drilled under the M62 motorway. This aspect of the work will ensure network resilience as growth in the area continues.
They will also be increasing the capacity of the sewage treatment works by installing 4000 cubic metres of storm water storage for use in heavy or prolonged rainfall to reduce the number and volume of discharges from the storm overflow. The storm waters will be stored in the tank until the treatment works has capacity to treat the wastewater, before it is returned to the environment.
Ward & Burke Construction Ltd have been commissioned to complete these works and will start from Monday 22 July 2024 and works should be completed in December 2024.
Most of this work is in private land and Yorkshire Water has liaised with landowners separately about this project.
Attached is a map of the area of works ...
The next meeting of the Full Council will take place on Tuesday July 18th 2024 at 7pm at the Town Council offices, Bridgegate, Howden. Please see below for agenda ....
Great to see this service being used and great feedback too … thanks to the Goole Town Deal … bringing people into our lovely town and also benefitting the people of Howden in linking with the train stations and the amenities a bigger town like Goole has to offer …
After some recent reports of more alleged anti-social behaviour across Howden, just thought I’d share this reminder about how to officially report it.
You may think it’s not worth reporting or nothing will get done
…. But every instance paints a picture and every report will be used to direct resources the right way …
Thank you
At the May meeting of the Full Council the latest Anti-Social Behaviour reports were presented to Councillors.
They show a very low level of ASB in Howden. The official reports appear to contradict what people are talking about on the street/social media , with much larger numbers of incidents being talked about.
I contacted the ASB team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council who reiterate what we have said before .. each incident needs to be reported either to the Police or the ASB team.
If they are not aware then there's nothing they can do.
I have attached information below with all the details you need to report incidents.
It's so important that the relevant agencies know what's going on so they can support the areas where support is needed.
Just under two weeks to get your applications in ...
For an informal chat if you're a bit undecided whether to take the leap or not, please get in touch - more than happy for a chat about what the role entails ..
We have a vacancy for a Town Councillor following the recent resignation of Councillor Ashton.

Every household in Howden should have received a flyer through their letter box about the proposed Community Woodland for Howden.
A big thank you to all of you who have completed the Community Woodland for Howden questionnaire so far.
There have been lots of very supportive responses - but we need some more - we need as many individuals and groups to complete the questionnaire as possible to help support our funding bids for the project.
So, why do we need a new woodland in Howden? Improve biodiversity; provide clean air and reduce pollution; improve community health and well-being; help tackle climate change; reduce local flood risk; and improve local recreation and engagement.
For more details go to howden-tc.gov.uk or go straight to the questionnaire at http://eryc.link/Howden-Community-Woodland
If you would like to know more or are part of a community group that would like to get involved, please contact the Town Council at [email protected].

And Marketing has made the press! The Visit Howden project was featured in a local newspaper recently and as a team, we are really proud of this website. Here's what founder Michelle had to say:
“This has been a fantastic project to work on for Howden Town Council. As a Howden-based business, we’ve been excited to pour lots of our local knowledge and our love for Howden into this project, and we’re thrilled with the results.
"The next steps are for branded boards to be put up in key locations across the town to encourage visitors to the website, where they can experience the range of things to do, places to visit and events going on in the town. Visitors can also sign up for a regular email newsletter to keep them updated on the latest events and more on the website."
With special thanks to our web partner https://www.facebook.com/8woodviewWebDesign for their input with the website and Tom Loves https://www.facebook.com/tomloves.shop for designing the logo
