What is ‘Spiritual Narcissism’?

The spiritual ego is born through spiritual materialism, with the term first introduced by Tibetan Buddhist Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987), and it explains the process of the ego connecting to spiritual development and achievements to increase self esteem.

Spiritual narcissism is the unconscious use of spiritual practice, beliefs, knowledge or personal insight used as a way of increasing self importance or superiority over others.

All narcissism is driven from an unmet need, and spiritual narcissism is no different, but as spiritual beliefs are subjective, and open to debate, it can create a fruitful home for the person to present as ‘holier than thou’, without risk of being challenged or proved ‘wrong’. We can’t for example argue that a person is no more enlightened than we are, so they remain safe in their grandeur.

Some warning signs of spiritual narcissism may include -

❗️Declaring that others can’t possibly understand them because they have attained a certain level of ‘high vibrational awareness,’ spiritual advancement or awakening etc. – and showing contempt for those who are ‘asleep’ or less enlightened.

❗️Posting frequent pictures of one’s spiritual practice, paraphernalia, rules to live by etc, online in order to boost self-image and status.

❗️ Claiming to be a ‘chosen one’ with ‘special access’ to a spirit guide/angel/spirit/saint for the purposes of self-importance.

❗️ Believing that people who hurt them are vibrating at a lower frequency which avoids taking responsibility for their own self awareness and puts themselves in the position of ‘being better’.

❗️ Wearing an inauthentic mask of niceness, positivity or spiritual wisdom to gain approval, envy or worship.

❗️Professing that they are a guru or messiah, chosen to heal others and the planet and renounce themselves through martyrdom and self sacrifice, or were specially selected to save humanity.

When we understand with compassion the genesis of most narcissistic behaviour is born from a relational wound, we can begin to see beyond the behaviour and meet the person as perhaps vulnerable and missing feelings of self worth, and our empathy can inform a more disarming relationship where we can feel less reactive when encountering it.

The reality of spiritual growth is that there is no end to it, and advancement requires vulnerability and humility in one’s ability to be open to continue learning and growing. Whilst self actualisation may be our goal according to Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), spiritual growth and development is a lifelong journey that infinitely endures. Notably nobody has the answers outside of our own experiences, one persons spiritual beliefs may be meaningless to another. Your greatest teacher for spiritual growth that you can ever hope to encounter will always be yourself.

Our senses guide us through life especially from nature. Whilst soul searching, driving through Snowdonia on a lone journey I came across an interesting snack shack. On stopping I needed the loo and was told there was a rather smelly portaloo down in a wild campsite 🏕️🏕️🏕️

On my way down I saw this pink Bush, it looked beautiful and connected me to my higher heart ♥ The smell, the colours. On leaving said portaloo I realised it smelled like Elderflower and looked it up. Pink Elderflower, a rarer cultivated type 💚💗💚🙏

The smell brought me into myself, my emotions, evolving into a new. Pink mulla mulla, Quan Yin, the joys of the higher heart 💗💗💗 I sought permission to pick some of the flowers and in exchange spoke and honoured this beautiful shrub 🌸

Today I will source what is needed to honour this flower 🌸 in a way she can be preserved as a reminder, potion or tonic 🌸 Nature provides 🙏💚🙏
