Following the sudden and unexpected death of one of the founding team here at the Phoenix, details about Paddy's funeral have been announced.

It will be held at Rotherham Crematorium on the 17th of June at 10:15am. People attending have been asked to wear a musical theatre top instead of all black if possible. Following this will be a wake at Swinton Working Man's Club (TBC)
His family would like donations instead of flowers to the ICU at Rotherham General Hospital where they worked for many days to save his life.

Patrick Sherlock was the Phoenix's first front of house and bar manager. For several years he was at the heart of our customer services and in those early days was instrumental in building the foundation that much of our later success was based on. Paddy was always ready with a friendly smile and an even bigger heart.

Paddy was involved in several school shows here at the Academy including Oliver! where he played an unforgettable Mr Bumble. He taught singing for many years with our Starmakers Performing Arts Academy sharing his passion for performing and singing with many young people across the area.
He also directed for Encore Theatre Company and made many friends in Encore and Kippax Amateur Operatic Society as well as all of the groups and societies who were part of the Phoenix at that time.

Paddy suffered a stroke some years ago which meant that he was no longer able to be involved directly with the Phoenix and even though he physically wasn't able to work at the Phoenix he visited from time to time and remained a firm supporter of not just us but the arts in the area.

Everyone at the Phoenix wishes his family and friends the very best at this sad, difficult time. He is a great loss to us and his passion, strength courage and friendship will be greatly missed by everyone.

The Arts industry has felt the full impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with many historic theatres already wondering if they will ever open their doors again.

Professional magician Kerry Scorah (one of only 20 women in the world to hold ‘Member of the Inner Magic Circle’), has watched her bookings literally vanish overnight. To help support herself and local theatres, she had an idea to take the decade long sell-out Cheltenham magic show ‘An Evening of Deception’ online via Zoom – and so ‘An Evening IN of Deception’ was born.

Kerry was joined by fellow full-time magicians and friends Richard Parsons and Mark Shortland, along with host Steve Knibbs and ‘Backstage’ Paul. Rehearsals complete, lights, and cameras rigged in each of their houses…the show was ready. Richard even performed the impossible – keeping his teenage boys off the WiFi while he was live!

The sell-out run supporting The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham was extended from four to five Zoom shows due to popular demand. The three magicians performed real magic by raising £1200 for the charity-based theatre and received high praise from viewers:

“What a brilliant night of LIVE magic in my living room!” Jo Durrant

“We loved being picked, we felt like celebrities…thank you all for this 5 star entertainment.”
Lisa and Andy

The Evening In of Deception cast are delighted now to be collaborating with the Phoenix Theatre, Castleford to provide the same LIVE interactive Zoom magic show for one night only on Tuesday 11th August 2020 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £15 per household / device + booking fee available from here https://castlefordphoenixtheatre.ticketsolve.com/shows/873620868 with £5 of every ticket sold donated directly to the theatre. Sit back on your own sofa, grab your popcorn and enjoy a wonderful family-friendly evening of magic with three fabulous magicians!

The events industry will not survive the next 100 days!

Since early March, the events industry has been mostly without work. All kinds of major events are currently prohibited due to the COVID-19 crisis. Corporate events, conferences, concerts, festivals, weddings, trade shows and theatrical performances are no longer able to go ahead. This is leaving an entire industry dormant, with over twenty-five thousand businesses and over half a million workers throughout the UK directly suffering the ill effects.

A mass appeal and a call for help to politicians to save the events industry
Companies from all across the events industry, as well as event locations, (event centres, convention centres, conference hotels, theatres, concert halls, playhouses and nightclubs) throughout the UK are invited to join together on the night of the 6th of July 2020. By lighting their buildings, or buildings in their region, red in order to draw attention to the dramatic situation in the event industry we can make a statement that can't be ignored. We were the first ones out, and will be the last ones back in.
