Many people in our industry have been impacted by the recent rise in far-right extremism, racist violence, anti-immigration attacks and Islamophobia. As a civic building at the heart of the cultural community, we want to offer a space for those affected to feel safe, heard and cared for.
We’re inviting Global Majority people, Muslims and refugees working in the theatre industry to informal, healing get-togethers hosted by our Associate Director Sameena Hussain, where we can share food, talk about our experiences and offer each other support.
Whether you are a creative, front-of-house colleague, a technician or a freelance artist – if you work in the sector, you are welcome.
We look forward to eating, talking and sharing with you.

What a year! 2023/24 was fantastic for the Playhouse – amazing work in our three auditoria, local, national and international tours, community projects, events and placements and incredible creativity from artists at all stages of their careers. Our building was filled with an array of events and conferences, and used in a variety of ways.
Highlights have included us reaching the milestone of ten years as the world’s first Theatre of Sanctuary and taking our Community Tour across the city to opening up our building to a wonderful variety of markets, lunch clubs, exhibitions and family activities. We have met and worked with some incredible people, artists, and theatre professionals who have created a plethora or fantastic work.
As a registered charity, we rely on the support of valued partners to make great things happen. We want to say thank you for the continued support of Arts Council England, Leeds City Council, The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation and the many charitable trusts, business partners and individuals that continue to support the vital work of the theatre.
Take a look back as some of our favourite unmissable moments from 2023/24.
