In a coaching career spanning 20 years, the 2 things that clients tell me they want more often than anything else is clarity and confidence.

Yet I see well-known coaches and business gurus telling people you don’t need clarity and confidence to succeed.

They explain that success comes from taking action even when you are unclear and lack confidence. In essence, shut up and get on with it or get out of the way.

They explain that it’s only after you succeed and look back on the journey that you have confidence in what you have done and clarity about the path you took.

Why is everyone so scared?

I have a lot of coaching conversations.
These conversations go beyond just the surface level of normal conversations.

They go deeper.
They are more honest.
They get to the truth.

Time and time again the underlying reason people are not:
🔵 making progress,
🔵 doing the things they know they should or
🔵 living the life they want to,

is because they are scared.

Something frightens them about taking action in the direction of their dreams.

It stops them in their tracks.

It prevents them moving forwards.

I recognise it in myself too.

As a coach, my role is to spot what is holding my clients back and ask the questions that take them beyond.

Last week, I was coaching a successful entrepreneur, who had been procrastinating for months, over two key areas of one of his businesses.

This was slowing his progress to the point that he was intensely frustrated with himself.

Two questions later and he could see the fear that what was getting in his way and his perception of the situation was completely transformed.

He instantly became inspired to take action.

A couple of days later and both areas of his business are moving again and he feels excited and inspired once more.

It happens so fast and it seems so easy that I nearly always get the response “I don’t know what I was worrying about really.”

This is one of the amazing things about coaching.
So often, these fears are under the surface, and we may not be aware of them.

Yet, they drive and control our behaviours in unhelpful ways.

They influence us beneath our awareness and prevent us from getting the results we want.

These hidden fears cause frustration and we judge ourselves for how we're doing in life, not realising the solution is very easy.

Next time you feel frustrated with your progress towards a goal, try asking yourself

“What am I scared will happen when I take action on this?”

Could you
be doing
better?

A client hired me for a 12 month coaching programme to focus on some health and mindset goals.
In today’s session,
as a result of a single question I asked,
he will send an email that will save his company 5k immediately.

Another insight from today’s session,
he estimates will lead to a doubling or possibly tripling of his revenue.

Life coaching, executive coaching, leadership coaching, business coaching….it’s all the same thing.

Ask a carefully aimed question and people will make amazing leaps forward.

I call that a good days work.
