I am frequently asked about PAT testing and whether it's necessary. I have put together an article with useful links for business owners to go through. It covers common questions such as whether PAT testing is required, the frequency of electrical equipment testing, and more.

HOW WAS YOUR WEDNESDAY?
Today was one of those days that made it for me.
It felt like a Monday..........................................
One of those times when you feel like you’ve truly made a difference to someone’s business.
I’ve been away for two days and came into face the mountain to catch up with. I kept confusing today for Monday because it had the same feeling.
My client wanted to catch up about improving their Health and Safety Policy. So, I logged on to the call and before we started they asked if I wanted to see their Health and Safety File that I had been coaching them on.
What really made it for me was the fact that once we’d discussed the file, and I told them I thought it was great, and I offered them a job 😜
They were so pleased that they had got it right and said
“This means we can go on to do bigger projects, and make sure we’re compliant and safe!”
Well! That is exactly why I choose my clients carefully. People that care and are responsible about what they do.
I love this company, they have come to work with me to learn so they can grow their business and make sure everyone is safe.

Preventing accidents doesn't benefit everyone
"What do you do?"
Me "I stop Physios getting business?"
Stunned Silence…………………..
It's no wonder that Health and Safety people get a bad rap.
Why isn't the health and Safety person asked to do the guest talk at networking?
I used to think people were trying to talk over me because they thought their business was more interesting.

• First Aid Box Suppliers
• Wheelchair and cruth manufacturers
• Prosthetic limb companies

Safety App for Women has been slammed!
What are your views on this app for helping people to track their friends and loved ones getting home safe.
Personally, I don't think it solves the entire issue of violence against women, but it's a control measure that has its use.
I would use it, but I wouldn't consider it a form of protection; just a method of hopefully raising the alarm with someone if there was a problem. But then how quickly would my friend respond and how long would help take to reach me? Would your friends instantly raise the alarm?

Women’s safety campaigners left ‘insulted’ by Home Office backing of women’s safety app - SHP - Health and Safety News, Legislation, PPE, CPD and Resources Women’s safety campaigners are calling the Home Office’s backing of an app that allows users to track their friends’ journeys home “insulting".
The day I got asked to organise for the coffin to be removed!
“Can you arrange for the coffin to be emptied, Liz?” Boss
“errrrr what coffin?” I said, looking into the eerie basement where the engineering department was.
“ The fluorescent tube coffin!"
"It's illuminated?" Strange thoughts started rushing through my mind- were they joking, had they disposed of the engineer they found asleep in the plant room?
“It's for recycling the fluorescent tube light bulbs; we call it a coffin."
"Oh, phew! Done!"
It was daunting starting as an office administrator in engineering; I had no idea what I was ordering, what the never-ending list of acronyms and terminology meant. Transformers, TMV's, grommets, actuators, RJ45s, lead batteries and bacon sarnies- the list went on! N.b. I knew what bacon sarnies were………..
The company even had a book of acronyms in addition to the engineering jargon; it was like learning an alien language.
Order some CAT 5 cable, they'd ask, get me 10 x GU10 bulbs, or arrange for the grease trap to get degreased. Can you sort out some fish switch keys- I won't describe the imagery that popped into my mind for that last one.
Lucky for me, no one asked me to order skirting board ladders!
It was a daunting time, all the acronyms and technical data, learning to keep records and schedule servicing visits that I didn't even know what the things were or their purpose.
I was super lucky to work with superb engineering managers and teams who coached me to understand what I was doing and why it was necessary. They took me around plant rooms and on jobs. Even the subbies would explain what they'd done and show me their work.
I often meet office managers who are new to their roles, and I get how they feel. I help them navigate the new alien languages of safety and FM by passing on the knowledge given to me.
Thank you to all the people that helped me with my career; you know who you are, and just to let you know that by sharing your expertise, you've helped hundreds of others too.
Covid hasn't gone away despite the stats levelling out: The infection and death rate is still higher than before Plan B was implemented on the 14th December 2021, so we all still need to protect ourselves and employees.
The trains and city are a lot busier this week. This is my local train station car park, which before the first lockdown you could never get parked after 07.30 am in the morning. For two years I've actually been able to park because it's been empty, so it gives you an idea of how much busier the trains and the city are if you've not been there yourself or noticed how jammed the roads are.
There are still legal requirements on businesses, so I have shared links to the most recent guidance from the government and HSE.
The HSE is due to update its COVID guidance on 30th January, but for the time being, employers are still required to carry out a risk assessment on how they will prevent people from catching Covid at their workplace.
There is still a requirement for Covid outbreaks in the workplace to be reported via RIDDOR and to the local health department.
I foresee it will be a challenging time for employers to request their employees keep certain precautions when they're not a legal requirement anymore.
If you'd prefer to chat through your risk assessment and precautions then I'm happy to arrange a call.
