S.W. (Wife of a Veteran) - - “I am so grateful for the transformative support and guidance I have received on my journey of healing from PTSD - and coping as a spouse of a s*x addict. My therapist’s approach has been marked by an incredible warmth, a wonderful sense of humour, and a non-judgmental attitude that immediately put me at ease.

“From the very beginning, she demonstrated a proactive and compassionate style, introducing me to therapy and mindfulness techniques that have been pivotal in managing my PTSD. Her remarkable insight, expertise and gentle encouragement have empowered me to break free from the fear cycle that I had been trapped in for so long as a partner of an addict.

“Her holistic approach, addressing both the somatic and mental aspects of my healing, has been instrumental in my recovery. She has never imposed her own thoughts or opinions on me; instead, she has listened intently, allowing me to explore and reach my own conclusions. As a result I have developed a greater sense of self awareness, and this patient and respectful method has fostered a safe space where I feel truly heard and understood.

“I wholeheartedly recommend PTSD Resolution to anyone seeking a therapist who embodies empathy, skill - and an exceptional ability to foster genuine healing. My therapist has profoundly impacted my life, and I am forever grateful for her guidance and support.”

We would like to welcome Laurence Regan to our growing team of psychologists.

Laurence is passionate about working creatively with clients to create transformational change. He believes that relationships and meaning making are at the core of who we are. Consequently, Laurence aims to work collaboratively with clients to develop an understanding of how past hurts might impact their current problems, relationships or ways of coping. Laurence is ambitious about not only reducing troubling symptoms significantly but also supporting clients in self-discovery, unlocking their potential, achieving more fulfilling relationships and improving quality of life.

While Laurence identifies primarily as a relational and dynamic therapist, he is trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches including cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), psychodynamic interpersonal therapy (PIT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). This allows him to work flexibly with clients to meet their individual needs and goals. Laurence’s particular area of expertise is adult mental health, working with individuals, couples and families who have experiences of trauma, relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, psychosis, personality and mood difficulties, medically unexplained symptoms, eating and body image issues.

How do you tend to answer when someone says, “What can I do to help?” or ‘is there anything I can do?”

For many PTSD sufferers, the answer is often, “Oh nothing, I’m ok” or “ I don’t know what will help”. With PTSD sometimes you don't want to bother other people with your problems and is so difficult to put into words how you feel, let alone what someone else can do to help.

From our own experiences with PTSD, we’ve created a list of things that you may find useful. Some of them won’t be relevant to you, but maybe they’ll jog an idea in your head of something that would be good for you. You can find this here: ptsduk.org/offers-of-help/

What else would you add to this list - what have you found helpful to ask your friends and family to do (practical and emotional ideas)? Please comment below and we'll add them to the list to help others in the future.

Neuroanatomical studies have identified changes in major brain structures of those with PTSD — including the amygdala and hippocampus – showing that there are significant physical changes within the brain as a result of trauma.

These brain changes from PTSD, particularly if not diagnosed yet, can make life seem very confusing, and understanding your own mind can become almost impossible.

Find out more about how your brain is altered by trauma, and how treatments such as EMDR and CBT can reverse these effects on our website: https://www.ptsduk.org/what-is-ptsd/the-science-and-biology-of-ptsd/

Pets, and specifically dogs offer numerous forms of support to PTSD sufferers. For example, assault survivors may be reluctant to go out in public without the aid of a companion dog who can instil in them confidence and a feeling of security.

People with PTSD who have a dog also don’t just sleep more, but they have higher levels of oxytocin and dopamine with reduced cortisol.

Furthermore, it is suggested that pets are a great way for an individual to practise controlling stress levels and regulating their tone of voice.

Find out more about how pets can help PTSD sufferers in our latest blog article here: ptsduk.org/how-dogs-can-help-people-with-ptsd/

Also, we've launched a new item in our Supporters Store for your furry friends too - a dog bandana! The cuter your pup, the more awareness they'll raise for PTSD UK :) ptsduk.org/product/ptsd-uk-dog-bandana/

"At the start of each of the sessions, the therapist asked me to think of the trauma, and scale it from 1-10 (1 being fine, 10 being OMG get me out of here) based on how you feel, and how strong your emotions are etc. For me, it was off the scale, it felt like I was going to be sick even just thinking about it (and she very kindly brought over a bucket just incase). She asked how I felt being back 'there' (vulnerable, scared, terrified) and how I wanted to feel when I looked back on it (strong, capable, and powerful)."

Read more about our founders experience with EMDR, what happens in a session and about creating your 'safe space' to go to in your mind when it gets too much. You can find this on our website here: https://www.ptsduk.org/my-story-going-through-emdr-treatment-for-ptsd/
