Parabens have managed to get an (unfairly) bad reputation for themselves in the last decade, with companies bending over backwards to declare their products βparaben-free.β Itβs very hard, when you are constantly bombarded with that statement, to not feel as if there might be a reason to avoid parabens. But Iβm going to explain to you that not only are they safe in your products - preservatives are absolutely necessary for anything you put on your skin!
Remember these three key points.
1. They have been used safely for over a century by millions of people - show me a better track record than that!
2. You need preservatives to protect your products from contamination.
3. Alternatives are less well-researched and may even be more irritating.
Companies often jump on scaremongering trends because it grabs peopleβs attention and misinformation is so prevalent they cannot afford not to.
Doctors have a responsibility to be objective. There is absolutely no scientific or health reason to avoid parabens.
In the early 20th century, radium and x-rays were the hottest new beauty treatments...until people started dying. β οΈ

Did you know that during WWII, plastic surgeons worked in secret to transform spiesβ faces, giving them new identities? π€«
This incredible story, hidden for decades, has only recently come to light after top-secret documents were declassified. Surgeons like Sir Harold Gillies, the father of plastic surgery, performed procedures like rhinoplasty, ear pinning, and scar removal to help agents operate undercover in enemy territories without being recognized. These surgeries were crucial for disguising spies and protecting their missions.

π Understanding the Different Types of Acne π
π‘ Not all acne is the same, and understanding which type youβre dealing with is key to targeting it effectively. Hereβs a quick breakdown:
1οΈβ£ Whiteheads (Closed Comedones): Small, white or flesh-colored bumps. Pores are clogged but not open, trapping oil and dead skin inside.
2οΈβ£ Blackheads (Open Comedones): Clogged pores where the trapped oil is exposed to air, causing it to oxidise and turn black.
3οΈβ£ Papules: Red, inflamed bumps without pus. They can feel tender and are a sign of inflammation beneath the skin.
4οΈβ£ Pustules: Red bumps with a white or yellow pus-filled center, often called βpimples.β These are a result of infection in the pores.
5οΈβ£ Nodules: Large, painful lumps deep under the skin. They donβt have a head and are harder to treat.
6οΈβ£ Cysts: Deep, pus-filled, painful bumps that can lead to scarring. Cystic acne often needs medical treatment due to its severity.

I love food and I love looking at how eating a varied and interesting diet can be beenficial in a myriad of ways. This colorful plate of sushi is packed with ingredients that support skin health, thanks to a combination of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. π£π₯π₯ Shout out to - my favourite sushi place on island π°πΎ
Fish like salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help maintain the skinβs lipid barrier, keeping it hydrated and supple. Avocado, another common sushi ingredient, is loaded with Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.
While thereβs no magic diet out there that will give your perfect skin, and causality is very complex when it comes to proving links between diet and skin changes, there is good evidence that including a variety of colorful vegetables in your diet ensures a broad spectrum of antioxidants that help combat skin ageing.
So, the next time you indulge in sushi, remember youβre also feeding your skin with nutrients that promote a healthy, radiant complexion.

Letβs talk more about twins! π―
We have long held a fascination with twins - people who share the same genetics and often upbringing but who are always their own unique individuals. There have been some wonderful studies done in the past, including the famous Botulinum toxin twin study and its follow-up that Iβve recently highlighted.
Twin studies also reveal other factors that play a huge role in facial ageing, including well-known things like sun exposure and smoking, but less well-understood factors like weight loss or gain and oestrogen exposure.
So letβs explore what twins can teach us about facial ageing.
