A mummy in labour needs to feel calm, safe and protected. A birth partner may be the only person in the room who you are familiar with. They can have a huge impact on your ability to feel calm and secure.

Did you know that TENS machines aren't just for labour and birth?
TENS can be really effective for relieving afterbirth pains. Afterbirth pains are similar to contractions and often occur in the days following birth. They are more common in subsequent births but can definitely still be felt after your first birth.
These pains are due to your uterus contracting and starting it's process back to it's pre pregnancy size, this is referred to as involution.
We recommend TENS for afterbirth pains as unlike Panadol and other analgesia, TENS machines begin working immediately and there is no limit on how much you can use them.

Save this post 🔥 With the red weather warning issued in the UK this week. Here are a few NHS tips to help keep cool:

🔥Avoid heat - Stay out of the sun during the day

🔥Have Lukewarm showers and baths - cold showers/baths can cause your body to retain heat

🔥 Stay in the shade - pregnant women may find their skin more sensitive during hot weather.

🔥Manage hot flushes - carry a small spray with you to cool down

🔥keep hydrated - keep a re-usable water bottle with you at all times

🔥Dress to keep cool - wear loose light clothing and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors

🔥Treat swollen feet - minimise time spent standing, wear comfy shoes, put your feet up regularly and do a few foot exercises to reduce swelling.

You are not alone! Pregnancy is a big life event and it’s natural to feel a lot of different emotions. Here are a few tips the NHS recommend to try to help with your mental health during this time

Do…
🌸 talk about your feelings to a friend, family member, doctor or midwife
🌸 try calming breathing exercises if you feel overwhelmed
🌸 physical activity if you can - it can improve your mood and help you sleep
🌸 eat a healthy diet with regular meals
🌸 try to attend antenatal classes to meet other pregnant people

Do not…

🌸 do not compare yourself to other pregnant people - everyone experiences pregnancy in different ways
🌸do not be afraid to tell a healthcare professional how you are feeling - they are there to listen and support you
🌸 do not use alcohol, ci******es or drugs to try and feel better - these can make you feel worse and affect your baby’s growth and wellbeing

Top tip ✍️ It’s all about Pad placement.

Here’s the science behind it 🤓 The electrical current flows from one pad to the other pad connected to the same lead wire.
So always remember to fully attach at least two pads to your skin (even if you are just testing your machine, if you only attach one pad you will not feel a sensation 💀). Your skin acts as a conductor, which allows the current to travel to your brain and help you block those pain signals…resulting in a great method for Drug-Free pain relief during Labour 💕

Tens machines… are they worth it?

Yes! Yes and yes! Honestly I’m the biggest sceptic, A few months ago I found the mention of Hypnobirth and natural pain releif remedies laughable, I thought rubbish pass me an epidural but something changed when the positive stories I was reading were from women who took Hypnobirth classes and read the books and materials available to them, they absolutely smashed their Vbac goals and so I started to take it seriously.
I got the and as soon as I knew my contractions were the real deal on 21/3/22 Robert helped me set it up and I ended up using nothing but my Tens until 7cm, I was timing my contactions with it and the time between each surge which helped the midwives and meant I didn’t need to be examined as often which is something I had written in my birth plan-
Everyone in the hospital was so impressed with how well I was handling each contraction with my Tens and Hypno breathes and I enjoyed each surge! I manifested that each surge was bringing me closer to holding Alfie in my arms and all I felt was excitment & love!
I only took my Tens machine off once at the push stage in the birthing suite.
I will certainly reuse it for time of the month or pain management if I ever need it! If your thinking about buying or hiring a Tens machine I highly recommend it and Elle Tens plus from - It was so easy to follow the quick set up guide and it was automatically in birth mode which made it easy!
