Does thinking negatively about getting older actually have a negative effect on your mind and body?

The Royal Society for Public Health has reported that, as we age, it’s harmful to us to be bombarded with negative images of the ageing process. Even using the term anti-aging for cosmetics and beauty products makes us feel negative about getting older.

But what should we call these lotions and potions?

And would changing the name of our anti-ageing cream to a skin-smoothing cream really make any difference in a media world that bombards us with negative headlines about being old?

The University of Exeter has recently published a study on people aged 40 and over on the effects of playing an instrument or singing in a choir on brain health.

The evidence clearly points to their benefits on cognitive function, memory and the ability to solve complex problems. The benefits are greater if playing or singing is done as part of a group - suggesting that there are additional benefits to the brain in the social interaction aspects of music.

So get out there and channel your inner Mick Jagger!

An interesting article I read recently stated that turmeric is good, not only for our joints but for our eyes too!

Most of us have heard of the benefits of taking turmeric to ease joint pain, but research from the University College London is doing exciting research into taking an extract of turmeric, called curcumin, and making it into eye drops.

"Curcumin is an exciting compound that has shown promise at detecting and treating the neurodegeneration implicated in numerous eye and brain conditions from glaucoma to Alzheimer’s Disease, so being able to administer it in eye drops may end up helping millions of people.” says Professor Francesca Cordeiro from the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
