Why this is the best time of year to eat more - backed by science!ย
Body:ย Food is directly related to how we:ย
1. Physically Function - it is fuel after allย โจ
2. Think - because it gives out brain energyโจ
3. Feel - both positively and negativelyโจ
The temptation to indulge is ever more present as it is a festive season and the food is down right amazing ๐คค
However, it is also the best time to be eating more, because it is COLD!ย
(Not just because of that undeniable deep happiness of consuming something warm in the cold weather when it hits all the right spots)
The cold is very important. As it is colder our metabolism naturally increases but there is so much more going on too!ย
Firstly ย - when it is cold, our bodies do a process called thermoregulation. Simply, your body keeps itself warm.ย
One way this is done is by shivering which is energy demanding (therefore metabolism increases!) ๐คฏ
The second way is not through shivering but by gaining fat!ย
HOLD ON! โ
This is good fat, really really good fat. This fat is brown fat and NOT the fat we associate with weight gain!ย
Brown fat helps use body fat as energy to keep us warm!ย
Now, that doesnโt mean you should strip off and shiver all day, youโll naturally be doing this as the temperature is low.ย
Again, this raises your metabolism! ๐
Lastly, eating protein increases your metabolism and raises body temperature more than any other macronutrientโฆ meat sweats is real!ย
So donโt worry if youโre eating more over the festive season, your body needs it! ๐
