Angling Adventures on Film
Angling Diary, in front of and behind a camera.
Good start, so much is needed to clean up our rivers. Many people call for action regarding the state of our pot holed roads in the UK, it is the unseen damage beneath our rivers that needs just as much action. Good work AT. Shout it from the rooftops!
Today's announcement from industry body Water UK of a £10bn five-point plan to cut sewage pollution from storm overflows has been given a guarded welcome by the Angling Trust. The Trust has highlighted that the full cost of meeting the targets to reduce sewage spills is in the order of £60bn over the next 25 years. Martin Salter, Head of Policy at the Angling Trust, said:
“Anglers have been at the forefront of the campaign against the scandalous pollution of our precious rivers by the water industry and we have been calling for a massive step change in capital investment to upgrade a creaking and leaking wastewater infrastructure that is demonstrably no longer fit for purpose. The fact that we can now see precisely where improvements are scheduled is a welcome piece of transparency, but it will also give us a nasty glimpse into the future for those rivers and streams where there are no plans to do anything at all to prevent sewage from killing fish and other wildlife."
Anglers across the country will be continuing to monitor the state of our rivers. Through our Anglers Against Pollution water quality monitoring network, we now have an army of citizen scientists made up of over 668 anglers regularly checking 201 rivers across 61 catchments. The data they are collecting, coupled with the information being provided by Water UK, along with other open sources, will ensure there is no place for those who pollute our rivers and seas to hide, and no excuse for the government not to take urgent action.
By Joining the Angling Trust and getting involved in our Anglers Against Pollution campaign, you will add your voice to our long-standing battle to hold the Government to account in our mission for healthier waterways: https://anglingtrust.net/get-involved/anglers-against-pollution/

The diligence that has gone in to the UK Barbel Masters this year has been phenomenal! Most prevalent, the charity support for Tackling Minds. I am pleased to announce my support for such a fantastic cause. 🎥 🎣
We have now had over 200 anglers register for the live draw on the 3rd March.
Ian “PikerBiker” Cooper, who many of you will have seen on his YouTube channel and the River Ribble Whiskers & Whispers page has very kindly offered to film the competition. This will help promote the event, the prizes donated by the numerous sponsors, and the amazing work Tackling Minds do for the angling community. Massive thanks to Ian for offering up his time to do this.
Several people have been in contact offering their support over the 3 days in October. Once we have completed the live draw, we will post more information regarding this.
Good luck if you are on the bank this weekend.

Q: "I’m currently on a really tight budget as I’m a student, so I can’t afford to bait up with loads of boilies and pellets. Can you recommend some cheap alternatives and how to get the best from them? Thanks for the help!" – Aflie
Tony Gibson says: "Hi Alfie, It’s been a long time ago now, but I’ve been in the same situation myself, so can absolutely appreciate why you’ve asked the question.
One of the most practical ways of obtaining plenty of bait, but at a budget price, is to go with particles. Fortunately, a very much overlooked particle, but also a very successful one, is also one of the cheapest to buy, in the form of “groats”. These are also sometimes referred to by suppliers as “oat groats” or “naked oats”. A search of the internet is likely to reveal that a bulk purchase of groats from a reputable supplier will cost a fraction of the price of more popular particles; making even pre-baiting and using generous quantities while fishing affordable on a budget.
Groats are a small off-white/pale yellow particle that’s easy to prepare and can even be prepared on the bank if you’re on a long session. My favourite method of preparation is to simply put as much as you think you need in a bucket and cover with boiling water and stick the lid on. Do this about 24 hours prior to the start of your session, checking the groats and giving them a quick stir once in a while. The groats will take up the liquid and swell up, so you may need to add a bit more boiling water if they look too dry. I like them to look damp and sticky, but not swimming, and giving off a pleasant, slightly sweet, porridge-like smell when they’re done. The coating on the groats should provide a lovely milky looking cloud when they’re introduced to the swim, that hangs in the water column, providing loads of attraction.
To supercharge your groats, various liquid flavourings and attractors can be added during the preparation stage, but as well-prepared groats provide loads of natural attraction anyway, I’ve rarely bothered, and any ‘extras’ add to the cost. However, liquid molasses is an additive I’ve used successfully, but ensure you don’t use too much, and ensure that any additive is well mixed with the boiling water at the initial preparation stage, else the groats may struggle to soak up the liquid properly.
Mixing in a tin of Dynamite “Sweet & Milky Pulses and Particles” to a bucket of prepared groats is another trick worth thinking about. This adds a few different food items for the carp to find and adds even more milky cloudiness to the baited area. If you search through the tin for a handful of the more solid looking maples and maize grains beforehand, it’ll also provide a load of superb hookbaits to fish over the baited area at no extra cost.
As groats are small particles, I usually prefer to use small hookbaits over the top as I’ve already mentioned. However, other hookbaits worth trying are tiger nuts, especially the Dynamite “Naked Tiger Nuts”, as a jar of these hookbaits will last ages. Or cut down “Pineapple and Banana Wafters”, or a “Sweet Tiger & Corn” pop-up, fished as close to the deck as possible are all potentially great alternatives.
Hope the above has provided you with a viable option Alfie.
Good luck!"
