🔥 Back Pain Isn’t Forever

Many people are told the opposite!

You may believe disk herniations never heal!

You may have been told degeneration is ruining your spine and that your spine is fragile ‘so treat it carefully’

The fact is, that’s a load of rubbish.

97% of disk herniations heal without surgery. Many of us have herniations without even realising. (Strength and support is key - with the right rehab and home exercises, you can return to what you love)

Your spine is ultra strong and very resilient- strengthen it and move it through all ranges of movement and you’ll be doing backflips into your 90’s.

Degeneration is a normal stage of aging. (Naturally there are a few very unique disorders that need identifying)

Perceived limits

A lot of clients ask me - why Hyrox.
Initially my answer was, “because it’s a new challenge and something different”. But since doing it, my answer has changed.

It’s a whole lot more than that.

When fitness gets tough I’ve always struggled with that voice in my head saying ‘you’ve done enough’, why don’t you stop and have a breather’, back of a bit’.

That’s never sat right with me, but I’ve struggled to find ways to combat it…..until hyrox.

I’m a true believer in that growth only occurs outside your comfort zone, so for my first hyrox I jumped in at the deep end with a pro singles race.
I knew it would be tough, so the random training started, with a few injuries on the pathway, I had to practice what I preach and adjust loads and training - naturally, for everyone who’s been injured while preparing for a goal, you know how hard and frustrating this is.

I knew that the physical element wasn’t on point, so i decided to use that time to strengthen my weakness (my mind!)
so I turned to mindset podcasts.

GAME CHANGER

Many podcasts later, I’d found a few strategies and thought processes to implement.

Race day came and I felt far from ready, unsure if I’d even complete it.
When sh*t got tough, I found myself turning to a few minset strategies, which silenced those voices and kept me chipping away.

Somehow at some point I crossed the finish line!

It took a while to sink in, but I started to realise that the biggest thing I took from Hyrox, was the fact I was able to push past my perceived limits. Setting new ones.

This alone made me stronger. Able to push that little bit harder and further, in workouts and daily challenges.

That was my hook!

I’ve found a competition that allowed me to train with friends in an amazing environment, preparing for something I knew would make me stronger physically and mentally.

Since then the mindset podcasts have continued and so has the training (although I’m yet to have a clean run up to the events - I blame age).

The last few years alone have allowed me to become more empathetic towards clients, and help implement new rehab strategies that I’ve conducted on myself ✌🏻

Everyone talks about exercising and eating healthy to look sexy.

However, Not enough people talk about the fact that it also makes you smarter and empowers you to have greater control of your mood.

When you exercise, sleep, and diet one of the things you’ll always see is increased focus, ability to control your emotions, and better memory.

What you need to know is your brain is always changing. Scientists now believe our brains are more like plastic – able to adapt, grow and change depending on what we do with them.

This process is called neuroplasticity.

Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) has been referred to as a fertilizer for your brain.

It is a substance that is found in your brain and helps to maintain the life of your brain cells, as well as grow new ones. It aids in neuroplasticity.

Research is showing that the exercise you do as well as the foods you eat have an effect on how your brain ages.

No exercise, eating a diet comprised of junk foods, and regular alcohol consumption is a fast path to brain decline.

Daily exercise and eating a healthy diet comprised of nutrient dense foods keeps the brain healthy.

Evolving your brain is not just limited to physical activity & diet.

Your thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions of the world also shape your brains evolution.

It’s not enough to focus on the physical aspects we must also seek to upgrade our thoughts and how we see the world.

Think about it this way:

Your brain is software.

Your body is hardware.

Don’t be like the average person who’s still running on Windows 95.

If you want to live a quality life well into your old age then you want to upgrade both on a regular basis.

Foam rolling - it’s like marmite. You love it or hate it!

One with 2 extreme viewpoints:
1️⃣You should use it before and after training.
2️⃣It does f*** all so don’t use it.

We sit in the middle and ask. WHY are you rolling snd WHAT are you looking to achieve from it.

For instance if you are using it to resolve pain and improve flexibility then as long as your ok with short term changes then continue but keep in mind that you could optimise your time and enhance those short term changes by looking at other methods in combination. Eg⤵️
💥programming.
💥modifying exercises.
💥movement prep prior to workouts.
💥active end range drills after workouts.

If you find foam rolling is more of a ritual and a feel good moment prior to your lifting then continue to endings on that euphoric vibe. BUT, keep in mind long durations are not needed, so at best a 5 - 10 min flow across bigger muscle groups should suffice.

Ultimately, look and consider other methods that may help establish long term changes.

The most overlooked injury 💥

Ankle sprains - if you’re thinking of letting the swelling return then getting back to it, STOP.

You wouldn’t do that with an ACL tear, and I can hear what you’re saying, “yeah but that’s different”.
Nope, it’s not - here’s why:

when you sprain your ankle you have a ligament tear.
When you injure your ACL, you also have a ligament tear.

They are both ligaments and need emphasis on rehab!
This doesn’t mean stop everything and rest, but we need to ensure specificity in regaining strength and special awareness along with movement control.

If you don’t rehab you’re ankle, you’re 60% more likely to re-sprain and develop chronic symptoms and instability.

2023 💥1st Client of the Year 💥

I know I know, it’s Sunday and no one is working on the 1st Jan!
But here’s the thing - I first saw Billie just before Christmas and she’s a PRO athlete in the USA who’s had a long term, poorly managed injury, leading to a serious injury. And Billie flys back to the states tomorrow!!

We do what we do, because we love helping people recover and perform, and I couldn’t let Billie return without guidance and structure for rehab and S&C expectations from her USA medical and coaching team.

Having experience working within a AAA championship level USA College, I’ve got knowledge of how their system works, and what she needs. So our session today was vital, not only for treatment and the next stage of her rehab, but also to build her confidence in what to ask for, expect and experience when back stateside. Ensuring a positive pathway to return to sport.

A few reports and virtual catch-ups are needed, but we’re on the right path.
We can’t wait to see Billie back to running and hitting those PB’s
