We've had a lovely, busy day here at Survivors! Our Activities Co-Ordinator decided on the theme 'We Are More', to highlight how we are much more than our mental health struggles. To reflect this, she made some cards for members that, on the front, have general positive affirmations; and inside, members have the opportunity to write encouraging messages about each other. These will be in the centre for a while, to give people the opportunity to fill them with encouraging messages for people to eventually take home.
Our Activities Co-Ordinator has also been creating Little Bags of Hope - these will include an encouraging message on a tag; a list of support phone numbers and our Survivors business card. For the next week, members will be encouraged to help create some more of these and leave them in public places, in the hopes they will reach the right people.
Lastly, members that came into the centre today were each given a bracelet with a card that simply states, 'Life is tough but so are you'.
Not just on this day, but every day, Survivors strive to bring hope to people - to see the whole person; to celebrate their strengths and support them in their struggles; and to remind them that they are so much more that their mental health difficulties.
You never know what someone is struggling with - mental illness does not have a 'look'... Be kind to all, including YOU.
Please note, the quiz will be on today between 1:30 - 3:30pm
It’s World Mental Health Day and we will be doing some outreach activities with our members throughout the day. It would be great to see you if you can make it into the centre… there may be a few treats 😊

We had our first Reach Out, Speak Out activity/chat today. Here is a copy of some of the things we will be covering over the next few sessions. We had some really great, eye-opening and in-depth discussions about recognising signs of struggling in ourselves and others; and barriers to reaching out for support ourselves or in support of others. We also highlighted that, for many of us, learning to hide our struggles may have been a survival tactic from the past - for example, if we grew up in a home where negative emotions were not openly expressed, or were shamed - but now that we are adults, we do not need it as a survival tactic! If anything, it is reaching out and speaking up that helps us survive, rather than pretending everything is ok.
If you would like to attend our next Reach Out, Speak Out chat, it will be on Friday 20th October, 12-1pm. Please let us know if you would like to attend :)
Here are some photos from our Arts & Crafts session yesterday. One of our members have written their first song in our Song-Writing Workshop, and has turned it into a piece of art work to keep in their room - doesn't it look lovely? :)

We have had to change swimming from this Friday to today. If you were planning on attending and are free to attend today, please phone our Activities Co-Ordinator ASAP on 07845 846113. Thank you. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

WE ARE MORE.
At Survivors, we are here to support people with mental health issues or those who are loved ones of those with mental health issues. But we also want to remind those that walk through our doors that their mental health struggles do not define them. It is important to remember that you are more than your struggles and any labels you might have. It can be really empowering to remember that you are so much more beyond your illness. Who are you beyond your illness? What are your talents and gifts? Feel free to comment below... :)
Not everyone that comes into our centre feels able to come to staff and ask for a chat. We recognise that sometimes it feels easier to write things down that feel hard to say. We have a notebook, envelopes and pens available - found by our leaflets. We do ask that notes are placed in an envelope for confidentiality purposes and handed directly to a member of staff, so we can work out how best to support you.
We have some new additions to our Activities from next month - many of which are self-explanatory, however there are three Activities we would like to bring attention to and explain further:
REACH OUT, SPEAK OUT - this will focus on how to notice signs of when we ourselves or others may be struggling; learning how to approach others when we feel they may be struggling, and the different ways we can show we care; identifying different ways we can reach out when we are struggling; and helping individuals to create a safety plan that puts them in a position of feeling empowered when it comes to recognising their own highs and lows.
WE ARE MORE - This will be discussions around how we are more than our mental illnesses; bringing awareness to who we are beyond our labels and how we can honour those parts of us that may have felt overshadowed or lost because of our illness. We are more than the limitations of our illness; more than just a statistic; more than the misconceptions of others... It's a group all about empowerment and remembering who we are.
IDENTITY & HABITS - This is a group about exploring our beliefs about ourselves, others and the world around us and how they impact our daily life and habits. It is focused on challenging negative beliefs about who we are, and creating new positive beliefs... and then exploring habits that align with those beliefs. It would be really helpful if you are interested in this group, if you could also attend the Reading Group if you are able, as this is on the book Atomic Habits, which focuses on Identity and Habits.
If you wish to attend any of these, please put your name down either by popping into the centre or phoning us on 01723 500222.
