The Active Way
Coupled with significant opportunities for environmental wellbeing, The Active Way will be shaped by and for the people and communities of the town itself.
Launched in Spring 2021, The Active Way is an exciting community-led project that aims to better connect the neighbourhoods, pathways and streets of St Andrews. From ease of active travel – cycling, walking and wheels of all types will be made welcome – to spaces that bring joy and protection for all, the potential is there to create a healthier, happier way of life. In turn, this
will ensure a positive, unifying programme that signifies meaningful change for the way we live, work and travel.
Let's give a big shoutout to the awesome P6 students from Canongate for totally rocking their Bikeability Level 2! This morning, they were absolute stars as they cruised around St. Andrews with confidence and safety despite the challenging Scottish weather. We led the two groups on different routes around town, stopping by the duck pond and the skate park for a quick drink. Amazing job, everyone - you should be super proud of yourselves! Oh, and we also made sure to check the air quality along the routes. Happy Air Day!

Petition
A key section of the cycle path between St Andrews and Guardbridge is not safe – for cyclists or pedestrians. We are gathering signatures to demonstrate to Fife Council the need to prioritise investment in improvements without further delay. Petition:
Can you spare a minute to help this campaign? Improving the safety of the cycle path between St Andrews and Guardbridge
We have now completed Stage 1 Feasibility for the project in April 2024. This is the first stage assessing where paths should go and where they could go, along with a lot of technical surveys and assessment of permissions required. We have plans for town wide network of paths for walking wheeling and cycling. These enable us to discuss the proposed paths in more detail with stakeholders such as landowners, the Local Authority, and the community.
We are planning community engagement activity, including an event later this year to discuss this and the rest of the project with the communities on the route.
We continue to work with landowners to secure agreement for the proposed path routes.
In February this year, Transport Scotland announced a decision to wind up the Sustrans Places for Everyone funding programme over the next year and a half, finally closing in September 2025, and not providing any new construction funding from now. Transport Scotland's replacement is a new construction fund that will be distributed direct to Local Authorities only and not community organisations. Our approach is to liaise closely with Council officers to ensure they are stakeholders in these design stages, and that local support means the project has to be considered seriously for construction.
We applied in May 2024 to our funder Sustrans Places for Everyone to move to Stage 2 Concept Design, which is the first stage of creating design drawings and working out the details. We expect to hear about the result of that funding application in late June or July, and we will update when we do know. We understand that it will be a competitive round, so fingers crossed. 🤞
Wow, what an awesome day we had back in March! Over 300 people joined us for the Skateboards & Bikes Festival to enjoy the amazing cycle stunt team, skate workshops, yummy refreshments, the cool smoothie bike, and live music from our talented Madras students. The bike mechanics were super busy all day doing minor repairs, making sure everyone's bikes were in top condition, and over 20 children swapped their bikes or received a new one!
The Easter eggs were a hit, and the kids had a blast decorating their bikes. Most importantly, the community came together, enjoyed the outdoors, the new skate park, and all the wonderful benefits of active travel, including cycling, wheeling, skating, and walking!
Feeling inspired to bring more active travel into your daily routine? The Active Way Project, an initiative by Transition and Whole Cycle Ltd, is working to improve the connectivity of our neighbourhoods, pathways, and streets in St Andrews. Their various proposals for street design improvements are set to transform our community. What does path route intervention mean?
Amongst other things, it means:
◦ Signage and traffic calming on selected roads
◦ Junction & crossing improvements
◦ Improvements to existing paths such as surfacing, widening and signage
◦ New paths
◦ Creation of one way streets with reallocation of road space to cycle lanes
These are just some of the features of our proposed route interventions for St Andrews.

This brave resident of St Andrews uses the ramp handrail to reach the Viaduct Walk. As a Town, we should do better and provide safe paths for all.
"Stop for our sake idling is a mistake"
Idling cars outside schools exposes children to toxic pollution levels and puts them at unnecessary health risks.
Primary schools in St Andrews have participated in an awareness campaign to help reduce air pollution around schools from idling cars.
Pupils were asked to create a design to encourage residents to switch off their engines at school pick-up and drop-off.
See the winning design below.
