Here is the 4th instalment of our collaboration with !
‘Villainy is an idea that seeps into every iteration of Vilith, in fact, villains have always been at the forefront of my imagination. Throughout the history of literature, theatre and cinema wickedness has long been associated with q***rness, whether expressed explicitly or covertly in coding, the connection between the two is inextricable. From a very young age I think part of me recognised myself in the q***r villains that slashed their way across my tv screen, I sympathised and idolised with them rather than the two dimensional heroes that catered to the majority. In cartoon these characters were camp, exciting and exaggerated caricatures of reality, their motives were lofty and grand, oftentimes rooted in the outsider experience. Indeed, as Harry Benshoff argues in ‘Q***r Cinema: The Film Reader’ whilst heterosexual heroes were painted with broad brushstrokes, essentially indistinct from one another, villains and monsters were given much more complex novelistic characterisations. As figures with greater depth it’s hard not to fall for the villain, there is something just so undeniably seductive about their break from these painfully broad brushstrokes. As a child it was these marked characteristics that I was enthralled by, they spoke to a part of me which was unconscious or deeply repressed and it was through them that I think I gained a form of vicarious confidence. In tribute to the q***r villains of my childhood I wanted to imagine Vilith in her evil prime, clad in black latex, silvery chains and thigh high boots. In dismantling heteronormative and gender stereotypes I think drag is the perfect medium for villainy and I absolutely adored capturing that alongside ***rsoc’
