This week, The Fellowship of St Andrews celebrated its 11th anniversary!

Aided by the Rector, Principal’s Office and wider university, the Fellowship split from another longstanding student group to refocus on philanthropy, the local community and inclusion. To celebrate, we took the pier on Sunday evening and rang the St Salvator’s church bells on Thursday.

Andrew, our First Fellow, reflects on his experience volunteering with the Fellowship and working with the community: The Fellowship has given me the opportunity to make some great, sincere relationships - not only friendships with the other Fellows, but also with many of the townspeople through volunteering, charity and community events. Having that wider network has added so much to my uni experience, highlighting the incredible history, traditions and community of this special Scottish town which welcomes us for 3/4/5 years.

Reflecting on her volunteering with the St Andrews and East Fife Girls' Football Club, Emory, our secretary, explains how important giving back to the community is:

"The Fellowship is extremely important to me because it has helped me to give back to my community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. It also allows me to gain a sense of purpose and fulfillment by contributing my time and talents to organizations and causes that I am passionate about. It has provided me with the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and broaden my perspectives. It is a way to be an active citizen, and to make a difference in the community around me.

Through the fellowship, I volunteer coach Girls’ Football at St Andrews and East Fife Football Club. This opportunity has allowed me to share my love and knowledge of the sport with young athletes and to inspire them to reach their full potential. It also provides me with the opportunity to give back to my community by teaching valuable life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. I find great satisfaction in being a positive role model and helping to shape the character of future generations. It has allowed me to stay connected with the sport that I have been passionate about for most of my life."

Caroline, our resident Historian, shares her experience learning about St Andrews and its rich history: "my role as Fellowship historian has allowed me to develop a sense of belonging in St. Andrews. By learning and sharing knowledge about this town, I have formed a connection with people from the past and present who have walked these streets. Although often seemingly different, university students and locals are able to join together in recognition of the richness of St. Andrews’ past, which leads the way to a vibrant future."
