The Village primary school is a beacon of hope where Palestinian and Israeli children learn and grow up together.

The arrival of a brand new ‘friendship bench’ isn’t headline news, but it’s a sign that we can and will always do more to build the bond of friendship that will create the future peace our children deserve.

We are delighted to announce that we will be hosting Maayan Schwartz, the award-winning director of Children of Peace, for the UK premiere of his deeply moving documentary about Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom, the Village.

This exclusive UK premiere will be at 6:30pm on Wednesday 3rd July 2024 at the Soho Hotel in London. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A session with Maayan and his dear friend Shirin Najjar, a Palestinian resident of the Village, who also features in the documentary.

Children of Peace offers a powerful exploration of Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom, the only place in the world where Israelis and Palestinians grow up and live together in peace. Director Maayan Schwartz is an Israeli born and raised in this extraordinary community. He is joined by Shireen Najjar, the first Palestinian to be raised in the Village, for a live Q&A following the screening.

This documentary has not only gained acclaim as an official selection at the prestigious Docaviv Film Festival and numerous other film festivals worldwide but has also garnered significant awards at various international film festivals.

Israeli & Palestinian children in the Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom primary school learn together, they know each other and they will live together in peace.

Children at Israel's only bi-national and bi-lingual primary school in Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom marked Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel) with a ceremony in both Hebrew and Arabic.

The text in Hebrew & Arabic reads (roughly translated):
"Today we are marking Yom Hashoah. It is an especially sad and uniquely emotional day. It is a day consecrated to the memory of the great suffering of the Jewish people, and with them other nations, that happened during WW2. The Holocaust. On this day we remember those who lost everything, and those who lost their lives, and we honour their memory."

We are a group of 13-year-old students from St. Pölten, Austria, and have learned about your peace project in our religious education classes. We created a presentation wall about your village in the corridor of our school to also let other students learn about Neve Shalom / Wahat al Salam, as we are deeply concerned about the conflict in your region. We hope, you are well.

We admire that you hold together, nevertheless, you certainly have many challenges to face. In our eyes you are a lighthouse of hope in an ocean of hate! Keep strong! Pray for peace, we will do, too. Adam Tali is a 21-year-old Palestinian who lives in Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom with his family.

Despite their differences, the recent conflict has brought him and his group of friends closer. Instead of playing football like they did in their youth, they now engage in deep political debates in their 20s.

Adam says that they don’t have any other option or friends, so they understand each other better than anyone else in the world. Adam and two other friends meet every week to find common ground and write a statement that they can all agree on. They hope to organise their collective thoughts and work towards peace amidst the ongoing war.

“The foundational tenets of the community - peace, mutual respect and trust - were suddenly under threat”.

In a recent article in the The Telegraph, our friends and colleagues of Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom discussed the challenges they faced after October 7th and the distressing conflict in Gaza.

The Village of Neve Shalom or 'Oasis of Peace' was founded in the 60s with the aim to prove Jews and Arabs can coexist peacefully.

More and more polarisation within our UK communities. More and more fear and uncertainty for the Israelis and Palestinians who face the escalation

Samah Salaime, Head of Communications and Development, says “We have to work hard everyday to produce mutual trust and cooperation, to build an atmosphere of security and equality between Arabs and Jews. We learned that even a difficult crisis like the war can strengthen our common values. The foundation on which we built the village of peace, justice, equality and democracy. This foundation needs to be constantly strengthened so that it will be our safety net in times of war.
