Here’s what Målin has to say about her experience:

“Kia Ora, I’m Målin and I’m volunteering at a girls' boarding school with an Equestrian Academy in New Zealand. Since it's rare to have an equestrian component in a placement, let me tell you about my role here.

On Academy days, I start work at 2pm, finishing between 5:30pm and 6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I start at 3pm. I usually arrive early to catch up with the head of the Academy. The girls have jumping, dressage, or cross-country lessons, and my job is to supervise and assist them, guiding them to the Showgrounds where the lessons take place. The facilities include a large arena for jumping and flat work, a dressage space, and two big paddocks for cross-country. Sometimes, I stay to watch the lessons, learning a lot and encouraging the girls when they need it.

We also hosted a dressage day where other schools competed. My co-volunteer Alina and I were in charge of our team – it was such a fun day!

If you love being surrounded by young girls, horses, and fresh air, this might be your dream job. While I can't promise your placement will be exactly like mine, every placement has its own magic!”

"I visited Vicky, Verena, and Änny at Camp Kaitoke after spending the night in the stunning Kaitoke Regional Park, just under an hour from Wellington. All the volunteers here absolutely love the camp and said the staff made them feel right at home. They deliver a variety of activities and have learned so much since they arrived. They especially enjoy the adventurous activities like the flying fox, as the kids really enjoy these and they love seeing them take on new challenges and overcome their fears. Verena and Vicky miss German bread but haven't felt homesick because the staff are so friendly and welcoming."

"Volunteering in Spain was an experience of a lifetime. Every aspect, from the family, the school, the community, and the location was perfect for me. I volunteered in a school just north of Valencia, in a small town called Alboraya, and from the very first moment they welcomed my friends and I like family.
I made countless new friendships, and every day was a new adventure in this school, surrounded by the most amazing people. Having joined the program as a 17-year-old, I found my time in Spain especially transformative to who I am. It is incredibly difficult to put into words, however on the other side of it now, it gives you a new definition of the word home, having found a second family, and a second community on the other side of the world.
I will never forget my time there, and I am incredibly grateful to all the people who helped make it into what it was. My biggest advice to people joining the program is that you get out what you put in, and when you give all your energy and love, it will forever change who you are.

Toni and Marla love the peaceful vibes of Raukawa compared to the bustling Camp Kaitoke, appreciating the close-knit groups and the chance to build strong connections with the kids. 🏞️ Exploring both the North and South Islands, Verena and Vicky embarked on a two-month road trip, immersing themselves in the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of New Zealand. From attending festive gatherings to camping under the stars, every moment was a new adventure.

🪂 Taking the leap of faith, they bungee jumped in Queenstown, the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, and conquered Roy's Peak for breathtaking views. They even got to touch snow in summer at Mt Cook and witnessed the adorable blue penguins in Oamaru.

🚣‍♀️ Back at camp, they joined their team for an exhilarating three-day canoeing trip on the Whanganui River, guided by Maori traditions. Their love for nature has grown immensely, with hiking becoming a newfound passion and inspiration for Verena's art.

About Fallas Festival: Dating back to the Middle Ages, the Fallas Festival is a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and creativity. Each March, the streets of Valencia come alive with towering sculptures made of wood and paper-mâché, known as "fallas," depicting satirical scenes and political commentary. The festival culminates in the grand "Nit del Foc" (Night of Fire), where these magnificent fallas are set ablaze in a spectacular display of light and sound.
