Autumn turns to winter: the Yorkshire Arboretum is now closed until 1 February 2024. Thanks to everyone who has visited this year - we hope you'll come again in 2024!

Today we celebrated the enormous contribution our volunteers make to the Arboretum over the course of the year, with a splendid lunch provided by . Our Operations Manager, Neil Batty, who has worked here since 1983, was presented with a Long Service Medal from by our Director - another amazing contribution to this beautiful place. Huge thanks to them all.

NEWS: Due to high winds, the arboretum and cafe will be closed on Monday 13th November - sorry for any inconvenience caused.

These new baby red squirrels are just making their first exploratory trips out of their nestbox - offspring to parents Holly and Erik! This makes a total of 12 kits produced in our first year !!

Glowing in the gloom! It may not be the best weather but our trees have lit up for autumn regardless. Tree Identification Course at The Yorkshire Arboretum - Broadleaf Trees - SEPT 14th
We will introduce you to the process of tree identification based on summer foliage, using a selection of common or native deciduous trees as our starting point.

RED SQUIRRELS BREEDING AT THE YORKSHIRE ARBORETUM
We are delighted to announce the arrival of the first babies from our new breeding group of Red Squirrels.

Four baby Red Squirrels have been born to two mothers, Holly and Hazel, who along with the dad, Erik the Red, arrived at the arboretum in winter. Their purpose-built, 2500 m2 enclosure was opened on 1 April and it seems that the squirrels lost no time in making themselves very much at home.

The first youngster, Hazel’s kit, emerged in mid-June, while Holly’s trio have recently been undertaking their first excursions from their nest box, enthralling visitors with their antics. Belinda and Kevin, who frequently visit the arboretum to see the squirrels said ‘It’s been so exciting to see the babies, from the first time they put their noses out of the box, to making their first ventures into the trees. They’re incredibly cute!’

Discovering Lichens — Yorkshire Arboretum Lichens are a much unrecorded section of our wildlife. Yet they cover 6-8 percent of the world’s land surface. Recently more people have become aware of the symbiotic relationship of the fungus and alga (or blue-green bacterium) which make up the lichen.
