Hi again, just a reminder about this survey in case you missed the initial post. If you could take the time to complete it, I would really appreciate it. There has been a good response so far but we are hoping to pusblish so every one response makes a difference! The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete.
I am looking for veterinary physiotherapists to take part in our survey investigating occupational injuries associated with working with horses.
The study is being undertaken by my supervisor and I Victoria Mc Mahon as part of my University of Liverpool Master’s degree. All answers are valuable to our research and you do not have to have sustained an injury at work to participate in the study.
If you would like to take part (the questionnaire is completely anonymous), please click on the link or scan the QR code and read through the information before completing the online survey.

It's the best feeling in the world as a physiotherapist to get feedback like this. Jerry was a pleasure to treat and his owner Brian really listened to the advice. We had two sessions and now he only needs a check up in 3-6 months.
Saddle fit should be checked every season, thats x4 times a year!
If you have an Erreplus saddle, this is a great opportunity to have it reviewed and optimise the fit. A simple change may make all the difference!
If you don't have an Erreplus saddle and are curious about the shoulder free technology, please contact Sheila. She couldn't be more obliging and is very passionate about accurately and dynamically fitting the saddle to you and your horse.
Erreplus Saddles Ireland
❗️EXCITING NEWS❗️
Lorenzo Asola, Technical Advisor with the Italian company, Erreplus Saddlery, will be coming to Ireland March 9th and 10th. Lorenzo will bring his expertise in saddles to Greenogue Equestrian Centre where you are invited to come and view the extensive range of Dressage, Jumping and Eventing saddles. You are welcome to bring your horse and try out a Demo saddle - no obligation to buy - just message me and we can arrange a suitable time.
Alternatively come at 2pm on Saturday, when we will be giving a presentation/demo of the saddles including tips to help you check your own saddle fit at home.
Learn more about what makes the Erreplus Saddles unique in design and fit- the 'Shoulder Free' feature a big comfort to the wide shoulders of the modern sporthorse - however an Erreplus saddle can be custom made for all breeds.
Whilst the Erreplus Jumping saddles are already well established in Ireland, Lorenzo will bring many different models of the Dressage range that are proving so popular in Europe.
So whatever your discipline, whatever your level of riding, you are welcome to attend, just send me a message or pick up the phone to contact me if you would like more information.

Those already with Erreplus saddles are welcome to bring them along to have fit or flocking checked.

Variation is an important consideration in your horse's exercise routine. Completing the same exercises, on the same surfaces 5-6 times a week can lead to repetitive strain.
Try and introduce alternative terrains/surfaces at least once a week.
Consider how long you spend asking your horse to go in a circle, straight lines are less stressful to their joints and muscles. This is especially important if using a walker or lunging regularly.
Inclines and declines can be used to alter the load the hindlimbs and forelimbs and change how we ask the horse to work or 'use' themselves.
Most horses will be going on a break over the next few weeks, but as you bring them back into work, consider how you can vary up their routine.
As your horse enters back into work, an assessment from a chartered physiotherapist can help guide you and your horse to more success and less injury.
Pilates increases body awareness with emphasis on alignment and whole body posture. Perfect for when you're riding and trying to make small adjustments to improve your position or seat.
Equestrian Pilates Monday evenings 7-8pm on Zoom. All levels catered for. Led by a chartered physiotherapist who treats humans and animals. Please contact me to sign up for the new block of classes. Numbers are limited.
To correct your seat and posture…
Imagine your pelvis as an old-fashioned goldfish bowl. To maintain your posture while you ride, keep the water in the bowl level. If your pelvis is tipped forward, the water will pour out onto the horse’s withers. If your pelvis is tipped backward, you will pour the water out onto the haunches.—Janice Dulak

Great systematic review from the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy by Macadam & Feser (2019) analysing glute max excitation during body weight exercises.
The findings found that cueing, verbal instructions and abdominal wall activation during exercises increased EMG activity of the glute max. This is great for news for you Pilates people!🎉
Most importantly, I think it's good to know you don't need weights or equipment to work out. You can exercise at home in full confidence that you are activating your target muscles ☺️💪

🎉🎉Roll downs
This is one of my favourite Pilates moves. It focuses on spinal mobility and is a great movement retraining exercise.
Starting off, have a slight bend at your knee. You want to lengthen the spine as much as possible, that means tucking your tail bone and chin in to really emphasis a 'C' shape.
As you reach down towards your toes, keep your knees in the same position and try to keep your tailbone tucked in as much as possible.
As you 'roll' back up, re stack your spine from the bottom up. Keep your tailbone tucked in, imagine each individual spinal segment stacking on top of each other. Let your head be the last thing to straighten up.
I recommend 3-5 reps, exhaling as you go down and taking a few breaths at the bottom. Let your arms and head become heavy and loose at the bottom. When you're ready, exhale as you come up focusing on your technique.
✨Last free Zoom class.
✨Mixed levels, newcomers welcome.
✨I go through the different levels of each exercise to accommodate every level.
✨As it is a group class with no prior assessment like I usually do, I recommend it for fit and healthy individuals without any injuries.
✨Please DM me if you have any queries.
