What a result for the O'Donnell family at York with Extensio! π
Trained by Pat, owned by his wife Una, and led up by daughter Sylvia, who also rode Extensio to victory on his last start βtruly a family affair! π
The stark reality of resistance issues in treating horses for parasites. π This highlights the need for a parasite control plan that is specific to your farm, your horses and your situation.

Rider Profile - Conor O'Hara
''My Story''
''I'm an equine vet from Limerick and have ridden ponies from childhood. I have show jumped to National GP Level and have ridden racehorses intermittently as my career allowed over the years.
As part of my challenge not only am I aiming to raise β¬3,000 for Irish Injured Jockeys, but I will also need to maintain my weight and fitness throughout and engage in race coaching to understand how to ride a race effectively.
All money raised goes to supporting the incredible work of the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund and your donation is greatly appreciated. I would like to take this time to thank my sponsor's so far.. and i'm really forward to seeing you at The Curragh Racecourse on 21st July 2024 ''

The Dooneen vet team provides the veterinary services to Limerick, Killarney and Tipperary Racecourses throughout the year. We are aware that there is a lack of access to both recent graduates and to vet students to gain race day experience and general exposure to the structure of racing, the veterinary input on the day and to witness the high level of care that these extraordinary athletes receive.
For summer 2024 we will be offering a small number of recent graduates and final year vet students the opportunity to come with us for a days racing. This will be race day only and for students separate to our week by week work experience opportunities for veterinary students.
To apply please email [email protected] with your name, date of graduation or expected graduation, what dates you would be available and a short statement on why you would like to attend.
Please note that these are unpaid externships and much of our racing falls on Sundays and evenings.
As an equine practice that is heavily involved in the racing industry and appreciate everyday the efforts of those who work in racing we have long been supporters of the great work done by the Irish Injured Jockeys
This year Conor has decided to dig a bit deeper, get fit, get the weight down and the stirrups up! Heβs signed up to to take part in the Corinthian challenge to raise funds for the Irish Injured Jockeys.
The Corinthian Challenge Charity Race is being held at the home of The Classics, The Curragh Racecourse on 21st July 2024
Any support would be appreciated and all monies go directly to the Irish Injured Jockeys.

π΄ What do you know about African Horse Sickness (AHS)? Here's a glimpse into its clinical symptoms:
Pulmonary Form ("Dunkop"): This acute disease is characterized by fever, difficulty breathing, sweating, pulmonary edema, and a frothy discharge. Sadly, it's often fatal, with a 90% mortality rate.
Cardiac Form ("Dikkop"): Presenting as a subacute illness, symptoms include fever, swelling in various body parts, conjunctivitis, and sometimes colic. This form has a 50% fatality rate.
Mixed Form: As the name suggests, this combines signs of both Dunkop and Dikkop, resulting in an 80% fatality rate.
Horse Sickness Fever: A milder form occurring in partially immune animals, either through vaccination or surviving natural infection. Thankfully, it's non-fatal.
AHS is transmitted by infected biting midges, with severe consequences for affected horses

EVA Advice for 2024
It is essential that mare owners check the individual requirements of each stallion farm that they are sending mares to for the 2024 breeding season
Stallion masters have taken differing views on the measures they feel essential to protect their horses from EVA in the absence of vaccines.
Some require an EVA test for all mares in January, followed by a further test 30 days prior to mating. Others do not have a mandatory January testing requirement but are insisting on an EVA test 30 days prior to mating. There are also farms that require an EVA test at 28 days prior to mating.
