Draw Out Urban Exhibitionists Completes Mural in Thomondgate, Limerick, Celebrating Community History and Identity.

Draw Out Urban Exhibitionists, a company dedicated to creating public art that transforms urban spaces, has just completed a stunning mural in Thomondgate, Limerick. The mural, located on the Temperance Hall building, features a black and white image inspired by an archival photograph of children cleaning in the community.

The Temperance Hall in Thomondgate, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. It was built in 1844 as a gathering place for members of the temperance movement, who promoted abstinence from alcohol. The temperance movement was popular in Ireland in the 19th century, and the Temperance Hall in Thomondgate served as a hub for meetings and events promoting sobriety and temperance. The building was also used for other community gatherings, including dances, concerts, and political rallies.

Thomondgate itself is a historically significant area of Limerick, known for its rich cultural heritage and strong sense of community identity. The mural celebrates this history and identity, and serves as a point of pride for the neighbourhood.

The artist behind the mural is Mariana Santos from Portugal. Santos is known for her powerful and thought-provoking pieces that bring attention to social issues and urban landscapes. Her work is deeply rooted in the communities where she creates, and the Thomondgate mural is no exception.

"We're thrilled to have had the opportunity to create this mural in Thomondgate," said Draw Out Urban Exhibitionists founder, Catherine O’Halloran. "We worked closely with the local community and Thomondgate Residents Committee to bring this project to life, and we're proud of the final result."
The mural features an image of children cleaning in the community, inspired by an archival photograph from the 19070’s Limerick. The image is a powerful representation of the community's history and identity, and serves as a reminder of the importance of community spirit and cooperation.

"The mural is a wonderful celebration of our community's history and identity," said Sean Mc ilfatrick, of the Thomondgate Residents Committee. "We're delighted to have this beautiful piece of public art in our neighbourhood, and we hope it will inspire others to learn more about our community and its rich cultural heritage as well as participate in small acts of citizenship to enhance their local area and generate sense of pride of Place." Special thanks goes out to Cannon Donal McNamara and his committee.

The project was made possible through the support of local businesses and support of local community. The mural has already become a point of pride for the community, with residents and passersby stopping to admire and take photos of the stunning piece.

Margarita is a Digital Illustrator who uses an iPad, stylus pen and Procreate as her main tools.

Marga has been working as a graphic designer for almost 20 years and she is passionate about design, learning new skills every day, and creating beautiful things that make people feel inspired.

“I love Procreate, do macrame and when I have more time like to do some watercolour floral shapes. I love to take photos with my phone of flowers and to find the shapes and vibrant colours they produce. I am constantly creating and learning new ways to draw in Procreate and this floral design express my love for flowers, bringing a combination of vibrant colours and motivational, hidden text placed around the flowers, hope you can find them!”

Margarita is from Bogotá, Colombia. She is currently living in Limerick for the last decade.
“I am a proud mum of a ginger 4-year-old boy and married to an amazing Irish artist, Ken Coleman whom I admire and love so much.”

About 2 years ago Marga was looking for something to help her to relax and disconnect from her busy work life and motherhood. She started to practice different creative techniques like watercolour, macrame, and digital illustrations. Her busy routine was taking over, and it was hard to find time to include this new creative way of self-care in her day. Her need for creation was growing so she then decided that she wanted to take it more seriously, to help her mental health and to upgrade her artistic and crafting skills. At the same time, she felt that she wasn’t sufficiently confident in her ability to empower her creative side again. She made it her business to dedicate specific time to honing her skills. Bit by bit she began to dedicate more and more time to her own creative process, much to her delight.

LIMERICK IS THE REASON I PICKED UP A CAMERA AGAIN

Born in the UK to Irish parents, raised in Coolock on the northside of Dublin in the 70-90's, then moved to Athlone to work on building sites during the Celtic Tiger years. Living in Limerick for the last decade to be close to his daughter but moving to London soon to be with his first love... and to document the ‘other half’.

As an atheist he is fascinated in the lengths people will go to when it comes to religion, hence the reason he spent the last several years documenting ‘manic street preachers’ on the streets of Limerick and Ireland. Attendance at churches is at an all-time low here in Ireland so I thought I'd better capture the end of era.

Kathy chose to paint the cherry blossom near to Wickham/Parnell/Mallow street. The cherry blossom in the People's Park is almost as iconic as the bandstand. When Spring erupts in the park, the cherry blossom calls people back to enjoy the city. (The warmth of Spring after a long Winter). The vibrant blue sky and the pale pink would also brighten any location and is in keeping with her style of painting.

Title - 'Untitled'

LIMERICK IS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Laura’s work encompasses drawing, painting and sculpture while focusing on contemporary non-image-based abstraction. The use of repetition, balance and chance are common themes central to her practice. The work is an on-going exploration of abstraction based on forms found in the natural work and those conceived by human ingenuity.

These ‘Sculptural Drawings’ consist of a geometric framework of columns, circles, lines, and squares married with organic patterns. These abstract visual landscapes play with the dynamics of shape and surface to create a visual display of light, texture, and form.

LIMERICK IS HISTORIC

Emmett Walsh is an Irish Visual artist focusing on the topic of Irish folklore and history of the ancient Gaels and Ireland throughout the decades, combining them with the contemporary culture of today.
Emmett decided to do his own take on the story of the River Shannon as he lives right beside it. There are many different stories about it but he chose the story of the Goddess the river is named after; Sionnan and how she visited the well where the Shannon supposedly begins. According to lore, she heard the Salmon of Knowledge lived there and she began to throw stones to get his attention. This angered him and he summoned the Ollphéist, the monster of the well, to swim towards her and kill her. The Ollphéist proceeded to swim, chasing her and as he did, he created a river from born from the movement. The water quickly took hold of Sionnan and she was washed out to sea where she died.
The Ollpéist is also known as the Cata of the Shannon, not unlike the notion of the Shannon's very own Loch Ness monster.
