Osgood Schlatters
Knee pain affects one in three adolescents. Knee pain is the most common musculoskeletal pain complaint in adolescents

Osgood Schlatter (OS) is the most frequent type of knee pain in adolescents and affects approximately 10% of adolescents, and as much as 20% of the active adolescents in some sports.

Osgood-Schlatter disease (also known as OSD) refers to pain isolated to the bump just below the front of the knee in active, growing children.

Adolescents during their growth spurt are highly susceptible to clinical conditions of the musculoskeletal system, including Osgood Schlatter Disease. Osgood Schlatter's disease is a growth-related condition that most frequently occurs between the ages of 8 and 13 years in girls, and between 10 and 15 years in boys. Osgood Schlattes's Disease affects 21% of athletic adolescents.

OSD is associated with sports that involve repetitive strain on the patellar tendon and the tibial tubercle such as jumping, squatting, kicking and running/sprinting. Sports like basketball, volleyball, and soccer come with an increased risk. Additionally, it has been seen that early specialisation in sports is associated with an increased risk of OSD. This is likely due to repetitive sports-specific loading.

The treatment of OSD is guided by the severity of the symptoms. Conservative management has been seen to be effective in approximately 90% of cases.

A balance of asanas (body movements) and meditation, brings about the union of body, mind, and spirit.

The class is divided into four sections;
• Introduction of body scan meditation and breathing exercise, to help create present-moment awareness and mindfulness.
• This is followed by gentle warm-up exercises for the whole body to aid limbering, flexibility and conditioning techniques.
• Followed by yoga postures (asanas), which are held for 1-5 breaths. Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. Here, we explore the range of body movement for the greatest opportunity to stretch, balance and rejuvenate.
• In the final relaxation we incorporate approximately 10 minutes of deep relaxation through Yoga nidra/meditation.

Regular yoga practice can create mental clarity and calmness; increase body energy and awareness; relieve stress patterns; relax the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration; improves strength, flexibility, and posture; reduce injuries, and improve overall well-being.

Why is my knee making cracking/popping noises? Should I be worried about it?”
The joints in our body were made for movement. These cracking/popping sounds are completely normal and are usually caused by tiny air bubbles that build up in the joint fluid and then make a noise when they burst. Another reason may be due to the ligaments and tendons catching as they move within the knee joint then pop back into place.
The time for concern when hearing those cracking/popping noises is when there is pain swelling and/or instability associated with the joint or when hearing a loud pop at the time of injury
