In codependent homes, the entire environment usually revolves around one person’s emotional state.

In my home, we were all attuned how my mom felt. Mostly because of her chronic pain. If she was upset or angry, she would completely shut down and give the silent treatment. She struggled to cope with her own emotions (couldn’t self regulate) and neither could anyone else in my home.

Without a secure (calm) regulated adult in the home I learned this pattern:

1. Someone is upset or disappointed and goes into a reactive or shut down state.

2. Other adults react to that persons state and feel the need to “fix” or change that persons mood.

3. Everyone in home is hypervigilant to mood shifts (which would mean loss of connection)

4. Constant “check ins”: “are you mad at me?” “Are you upset?” “come here, it’s going to be ok” “what’s wrong”

- these check ins are from a fear based state of wanting to play the role of fixer of someone else’s emotion.

As I heal from codependency I learn:

1. I’m responsible for how I feel and the energy I bring to each situation— not anyone else’s

2. Being disappointed or upset is natural and not something to fix or become reactive around.

3. If someone’s (or I am) upset, that needs to be directly communicated: codependent homes tend to speak in passive aggressive communication or by sending “messages” rather than directly communicating.

4. People are free to be in a bad mood and my role isn’t to rescue them from it

5. Learning how to self regulate allows me to cope with my emotional discomfort and anxiety so I don’t project it onto others

I feel so honored for this life-altering opportunity in training towards an internationally recognized Somatic Psychotherapy clinician and hope to hone newly found skills in treating trauma while on the 3-year passage to my diploma.

I got to speak at Masa’s Mental Health Conference today on navigating the non-binary and transgender spectrum.
The lecture highlighted sensitivities in working with non-binary and transgender participants and aimed to psycho-educate leaders in the context of running their programs. I’m grateful to Masa for offering their professionals the opportunity to explore this complex topic in an effort to refine their protocols and approach with this vulnerable population. Yashar Koach!
