Begin your journey to heal your hormones naturally, no matter the issue (typically when you focus on certain habits, it is a domino effect to solving other issues).

Step 1: Fix your diet
Ever so often a food will become demonized for something: eggs because of cholesterol, fat in general for fear of gaining weight, now people seem to think carbohydrates are the root of all evil. Cholesterol helps build our hormones (and did you know: dietary cholesterol does NOT contribute to the cholesterol in your blood), you get energy from carbohydrates, and fats are literally the backbone of our cells! So get a good source of protein, fat and fibre in your diet.

Step 2: Get at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night
Sleep is our body’s time to truly relax and repair from the day. Sleep deprivation can impact memory, attention, decision making skills and is often compared to the effects of drinking excess alcohol. The consequences of a sleepless night can last for days after. Some tips on getting a better nights rest: turn off electronics an hour before bed, drink a cup of chamomile tea, put a few drops of lavender in the diffuser, and make your room as dark as possible.

Step 3: Manage your stress
Now, I understand it’s impossible to get rid of stress, but it’s more how YOU react to stress. Try the following techniques to calm yourself:
4-7-8: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, breathe out for 8 seconds.
Meditation: I will have a separate post on meditation techniques coming soon, but for now try focusing on your breath for 3-5 minutes with your eyes closed.

Step 4: Blood sugar management
One out of every two people have insulin resistance due to our diets high in refined carbohydrates and poor intake of fibre. Generally, a diet focused on quality protein, whole grains, and vegetables; cutting back on refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, white sugar, etc), processed/sugary foods and caffeine (especially on an empty stomach), and fueling prior to exercising allows your body to even out your glucose levels.

The best way to avoid being misled by product labels is to avoid processed foods altogether. After all, whole food doesn’t need an ingredients list.

Still, if you decide to buy packaged foods, be sure to sort out the junk from the higher-quality products.

Health claims on packaged food are designed to catch your attention and convince you that the product is healthy.

Here are some of the most common claims — and what they mean:

Multigrain. This sounds very healthy but only means that a product contains more than one type of grain. These are most likely refined grains — unless the product is marked as whole grain.

Natural. This does not necessarily mean that the product resembles anything natural. It simply indicates that at one point the manufacturer worked with a natural source like apples or rice.

Organic. This label says very little about whether a product is healthy. For example, organic sugar is still sugar.

No added sugar. Some products are naturally high in sugar. The fact that they don’t have added sugar doesn’t mean they’re healthy. Unhealthy sugar substitutes may also have been added.

Zero trans fat. This phrase means “less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving.” Thus, if serving sizes are misleadingly small, the product may still contain trans fat.

Sticking to a healthy diet, while travelling or on vacation can be challenging, especially when you’re faced with tempting food options that are not always nutritious. However, it is important to take health choices in order to maintain your energy levels and avoid weight gain.

Plan ahead. Before you leave home, pack some healthy snacks and meals that you can take with you. This will help you avoid unhealthy choices when you’re feeling hungry and rushed. Some good options include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, yoghurt and whole wheat crackers. Also, be mindful of your portion sizes. It’s easy to over eat when you are eating out, so be mindful of your portion sizes. If you are not sure how much to eat, ask your server for a to-go box so you can save half of your meal for later.

It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to be perfect. If you indulge in a few unhealthy choices while you are travelling, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just get back as soon as possible. The most important thing is to make healthy choices most of the time.

🍭Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that enters the bloodstream quickly. This causes a spike in blood sugar levels, which triggers the release of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy.

However, the body can only use a limited amount of insulin at a time. This means that some of the glucose will remain in the bloodstream. The excess glucose will be stored as fat.

📈This process can lead to weight gain and obesity. It can also make it difficult to lose weight.

🍏If you are trying to lose weight, it is important to limit your intake of sugar. You can do this by cutting back on sugary foods and drinks, such as candy, soda, and pastries. Choose healthier options, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

🏃‍♀️ It is also important to exercise regularly. Exercise helps to lower blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance.

If you are struggling to control your sugar intake, talk to a health professional. They can help you develop a plan to reduce your sugar intake and improve your health.

🔁 Here are some tips for breaking the sugar addiction cycle:

🥪Eat regular meals and snacks. This will help to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
