Understanding the difference between su***de and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).
Trigger Warning: This post may contain sensitive content for some people❗❗
Su***de attempt:
💔 Intentionally trying to end one's life
📝 May involve a plan and preparation
😔 Usually driven by feelings of hopelessness, despair, and a desire to escape from emotional pain
NSSI:
🩸 Self-injury that is NOT intended to be fatal
💥 Often impulsive and may not involve a plan
🤕 May be used as a coping mechanism to deal with emotional distress or to communicate distress to others
Common characteristics:
💔 Both behaviours are likely associated with underlying emotional pain, distress, and mental health issues.
📣If someone you know is engaging in NSSI or is at high risk for su***de, it's important to approach them with compassion and understanding and encourage them to seek help from a mental health professional.
But for that, you have to know the signs 👀 (and have the skills), and that’s what Mental Health First Aid is teaching us all about.
👉Let's work together to raise awareness and support those who may be struggling.

Tips to improve your listening skills for mental health conversations
It’s no secret that mental health conversations can be difficult to have, and it’s even more challenging to be a good listener in those conversations.
Listening attentively to someone in need can be a powerful tool for support and can make a huge difference in their mental health.
So, here’s how to become a better listener:👇🏻
✔️ Make eye contact by being intent (please don’t stare)
✔️ Focus on what is being said, and don’t check your phone or the time, as it shows boredom.
✔️ Listen and allow the person to speak without interrupting.
✔️ Do not pressure someone to answer quickly.
✔️ If something is not clear, ask clarifying questions in a friendly and non-judgmental way.
✔️ Repeat what you heard for confirmation.
✔️ Reflect on what you heard.
✔️ Listen between the lines (body language, posture, facial expressions, eye contact, etc.)
Do you consider yourself to be a good listener?

How mental health awareness can help make life better
Mental health is an important part of our overall wellbeing.
While we often focus on physical health, it’s just as important to pay attention to our mental health.
It can be difficult to recognize and acknowledge the impact that mental health has on our lives, but when we do, it can open up a whole new world of possibilities.
By being aware of mental health
🔸️ It helps to understand that we need to also care for our mental well-being
🔸️ It helps to differentiate mental health from mental illness
🔸️ It helps to understand your emotional and thought patterns better
🔸️ It helps to address the early signs of poor mental health
🔸️ It helps talk about mental health as a status of well-being in the public
By increasing awareness, we can help to create a world where mental health is taken seriously and given the support it deserves.

Building a community of care: why strengthening mental health means strengthening community-based care.
If you didn’t get the memo yet – mental health is an essential part of overall wellbeing and is too often overlooked.
To create a healthier, happier society, it is essential that we focus on transforming mental health care and strengthening community-based care.
This means providing an interconnected network of services that include mental health services integrated into general health care, such as
🔹️ community mental health services,
🔹️ peer support
🔹️ recovery services,
🔹️ and other services that deliver mental health care in non-health settings.
This provides an additional layer of support by allowing people to use their own experiences to help each other.
It is a people-centred and recovery-oriented type of care.
That’s why community-based mental health care is more acceptable than institutional care and provides better outcomes for people with mental health conditions.
Mental Health First Aid courses are proven to enhance mental health literacy among individuals which helps build empathy towards people experiencing mental health problems.
