A must read:
Viktor Frankl, one of the great psychiatrists of the twentieth century, His little book, Man’s Search for Meaning, is one of those life-changing books that everyone should read.
Frankl once told the story of a woman who called him in the middle of the night to calmly inform him she was about to commit su***de. Frankl kept her on the phone and talked her through her depression, giving her reason after reason to carry on living. Finally she promised she would not take her life, and she kept her word.
When they later met, Frankl asked which reason had persuaded her to live?
"None of them", she told him.
What then influenced her to go on living, he pressed?
Her answer was simple, it was Frankl’s willingness to listen to her in the middle of the night. A world in which there was someone ready to listen to another's pain seemed to her a world in which it was worthwhile to live.
Often, it is not the brilliant argument that makes the difference. Sometimes the small act of listening is the greatest gift we can give.
The importance of mental health has become a priority for many.
Taking breaks helps calm the central nervous system and also helps shift brain states.
A few signs that you need a break..
Lack of motivation
Easily triggered
Feeling mentally exhausted and experiencing Brain fog which is characterized by confusion, forgetfulness, and a lack of focus and mental clarity
Relaxing activities like walking, meditation and being in nature can improve and do wonders for your mental health.
Mental health is the greatest wealth ❤️
It's okay...
When stress hits.
Everyone tries to cope with it in their own way, so start experimenting now to find what works best for you.
The body is nothing without a sound mind.
Caring for your mental health should be a top priority. Your mental health is far more important than you can even imagine.
Have you ever felt happy and sad at the same time?
For example: Loving someone who can’t or won’t love you back.
Love is a positive, exhilarating emotional state. But if it isn’t reciprocated it can induce an equally powerful negative emotional state like frustration, disappointment, sorrow, regret, grief and despair.
These two “sets” of opposing emotions, taken together, can be seen as depicting an experience perhaps best portrayed as - bittersweet.
We’ve all found ourselves in a push/pull situation at times.
Having mixed emotions or mixed feelings is really common
The best way to resolve internal conflict between your thoughts and emotions is to face them.
Repeat often and believe - Affirmations.
Good read:
Breathe and unlearn
Letting go of roles
Letting go of projections
Letting go of judgements
Letting go of stories
Letting go of self-hatred
Letting go...by going inward and sticking with the process, Dismantling the heavy fortresses barring entrance to a life of presence.
Difficult to do but more difficult to keep holding on.
Happy Diwali
"Nothing that grieves us can be called little: by the eternal laws of proportion a child's loss of a doll and a king's loss of a crown are events of the same size"
Mark Twain
You don't just lose someone the day they die.
You lose them over and over again, with each new day and each new experience.
Forever.
A few questions that I am often asked during the therapy sessions-
" I'm not really sad anymore.
Does that mean I have forgotten the one I loved? I feel guilty.
No. It just means that right now you are feeling other things.
Shouldn't I be over it by now?
Losing someone is a reality one doesn't want to accept, it isn't about how long one has been grieving but what matters is that if the grief is so consuming and debilitating that it is impacting one's ability to function.
In these cases, it is extremely important to seek out professional help and determine if medication and therapy might be helpful.
The 3 Seives
- Socrates
One day a man runs up to Socrates and said: “I have to tell you something about your friend who…”
“Hold up” Socrates interrupts him “About the story you’re about to tell me, did you put it trough the three sieves?”
The man was not familiar with the three sieves, so Socrates continued: “The first is the sieve of Truth. Are you sure that what you are going to tell me is true?”
“To tell the truth”, said the man, “no, I just overheard it”.
“What about the sieve of Goodness. Will you tell me something good or positive about this man?”
The man shook his head.
“Now, what about the last sieve. Is it necessary to tell me what you’re so excited about?”
When the man bowed his head in shame, Socrates smiled and said “Well, if the story you’re about to tell me is neither true, good or necessary, just forget it and don’t bother me with it.”
The story about the three sieves is something we can apply to our lives. Before telling a story or passing on a rumour, ask oneself whether it is true, kind or necessary.
Why not focus on “uptalking” others, concentrating on their strengths?
Personal reflection is taking the time to think about, meditate on, evaluate, and give serious thought to your own behaviours, thoughts, attitudes, motivations, and desires.
A few important questions to start with are...
Today....did I work toward my goals? ..what habits do I need to stop? ..what motivated me? ..what am I really scared of?..am I holding on to something that I need to let go of?..have I been the person that I want to be? ..what mistakes did I make and what can I learn from them? ..who am I really and what worries me most about the future?..what am I grateful for ? ...
If you would like to maximize the benefits of self reflection, ask yourself questions that provoke your mind to reconsider the way you live and the way you look at the world.
Changing a Thought Can Change Our Experience.
Our thoughts are like seeds.
Therefore It is important for us to be intentional with our thoughts
Sustaining mental health requires work and time.
The more you invest in your mental health, the stronger it will be.
What is better than Best efforts?
Reasonable efforts, keeping in mind what can be done in the moment, Mindfully.
Keeping your mental health in mind, Your BEST efforts will change and will look different each day.
Do your best one step at a time,
Mindfully.
When it feels a lot, take some time out and focus on self-care.
It can feel counterintuitive but energy, hope and motivation aren’t in limitless supply, we often need to stop, to re stock, Mindfully.
IT’S OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY
Recovery has ups and downs. When one owns up to not being okay, it leads to acceptance, change and self-care.
RELAPSE DOESN’T ERASE THE ACHIEVEMENTS
All we want is to be happy and calm. It is our favourite mind state. And most of us pursue happiness by doing things that make us feel "If I do this, this will make me HAPPY"
Emotions colour our lives in vibrant shades.
Imagine the world coloured only in your favourite colour. No shades, hues or beautiful sunsets, the shades of the ocean all gone, and the pretty butterflies too.
Emotions serve a wide variety of purposes
Emotions help you take decisions, avoid perceived dangers.
Emotions can be fleeting, persistent, powerful, complex, and even life-changing. They can motivate us to act in particular ways and give us the tools and resources we need to interact meaningfully in our social worlds.
Having good emotional regulation skills is linked to well-being. Sometimes emotions can feel difficult to cope with. If your emotions continue to feel overwhelming, it may be time to seek professional support. Take care of your mental health.
Happy Independence Day 🇮🇳
Better Mental Health
Find your comfort zone.
Then leave it.
It takes courage to step from the comfort zone into the fear zone.
If people respond by overcoming their fears in stressful situations, they grow as individuals because after a learning period, a new comfort zone is created, expanding one’s ability to reach even greater heights. This is what it means to be in the growth zone.
Life is full of opportunities to step outside the comfort zone, but grabbing hold of them is the first step💟
Prioritization should be flexible, as you may need to interrupt low-priority tasks for urgent must-dos.
Tasks can be grouped into 4 categories:
urgent and important
not urgent but important
urgent but not important
neither urgent nor important
Having to deal with too many urgent tasks can be stressful.
People who manage their time well concentrate on "not urgent but important" activities.
That way they lower the chances of activities ever becoming "urgent and important".
The aim is to learn how to become better at reducing the number of urgent and important tasks.
Prioritize Your Mental Health
OVERTHINKING?
What is the difference between thinking something through, thoroughly and overthinking?
And more importantly- how do you know which of them you're doing?
Ask yourself
Is more clarity being gained?
Is more value being added ?
Overthinking is driven by fear and anxiety
It is when you go back and forth between rational and irrational thoughts. If you also repeat the same ideas, even when they've been answered before.
Critical thinking is driven by logic and creativity
A critical mind is more detached, structured, with a framework of what to ask and how to judge answers. Feelings are more constructive: curiosity, interest, excitement.
Remember that action is more important than perfection. Let go of 'perfection'. Sometimes, 'good enough' is truly good enough
Walk forward, take small steps
Trust that any perceived misstep is just another route to the destination
Practise mindfulness
While critical thinking can truly help us be the best version of ourselves, overthinking on the other hand may have an opposite effect completely. Sometimes more is lost by indecision than the wrong decision.
How do you handle your thoughts ?
Is it a work in progress or worry in progress?
