When students of Vishwa Vidyapeeth school in Bengaluru returned after the pandemic, they were welcomed by a lush organic farm, which slowly became an integral part of their curriculum, too -- all thanks to the unique idea of the school director, Suseela Santhosh.
Suseela saw an opportunity in the vacant campus when the school was closed for children, and an idea struck. Why not transform the school into an organic farm? “We already had a small farm set up, which we decided to expand. Many of our non-teaching staff were left with no work. This way, they would be occupied, and we would have developed a bountiful farm,” she explains.
Today the organic farm spreads across the campus. It occupies the vast kitchen terrace of the school, the backyard and the empty spaces between the buildings. They also set up compost pits turning the dead leaves into manure.
“We also used the harvested rainwater and the greywater from the kitchen for farming. Additionally, a water channel inside the campus was used to grow over 200 banana plants,” says Suseela.
The farm now produces roughly 35-40 kg produce per month. This is used in the school kitchen as lunch and breakfast for children and staff. The rest of the food is also being distributed in the nearby apartments.
As the farm became an integral part of their curriculum, Suseela and her team involved all the students in farming activities. This hands-on experience instilled a sense of responsibility in the students.
"Schools shouldn’t be a place where we deliver knowledge only through textbooks. We should prepare them to face any adversities and mould them so that they will adapt to any situation,” she concludes.
