Development of People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) at Govitri Grampanchayat, Maval Taluka, Pune District

A project by The Ecological Solutions and Sakal Social Foundation, it is an effort to actively involve the crucial stakeholders, the local people, in owning, documenting and protecting the traditionally percolated knowledge of biodiversity. Preparation started in Dec 2020 under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Mungikar (Conservation Biologist and Member of State Biodiversity Board). Fieldwork was planned in August for 17-18 days and later, data compilation and report writing took place at the headquarters of the NGO.
Govitri Groupgrampanchayat comprises of five villages namely Govitri, Valvanti, Vadavli, Kolwadi, Bhajgaon. Our wonderful team of 10 interns was present on field for on-ground work of interviews and resource mapping. The interns visited the locals from different walks of life, interacted with them in their houses as well as farms and collected the needful data for the PBR. Before starting with the interviews, an awareness program was conducted in every village to introduce the concept, importance and the dire need of PBR on a global level. The response we received from the locals was filled with enthusiasm and cooperation. The experience we had on and off field was overwhelming since we got to learn so much about the local biodiversity while enjoying the beautiful monsoon and scenic views of the Western Ghats.

This Pilot level project is presently implemented in Kothrud - Karve Nagar and Sinhagad Road Ward office area (Ward no. 12, 13, 30, 33, 34).
