AESA Award 2024 for the project by Prasanna Desai architects in Baramati : Creating a Street for all from Pencil Chowk to GaDiMa Auditorium.

To appreciate and encourage good practices in building design and construction, and to further the cause of creating a better built environment, AESA instituted the AESA Awards in the year 1995 on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the association. This award reflects upon the concept of Teamwork. AESA believes that a successful project happens when there is a healthy collaboration between Architect, Structural and Allied Consultants, Contractor and Owner.

Baramati Nagar Parishad (Client) , Prasanna Desai Architects (Architect, Urban Designer) , Pavetech (Project Management Consultant) and Nikhil Construction (Contractor), won the AESA Award 2024 in the Infrastructure category for Connecting Street For All - Pencil Chowk To Gadima Auditorium, Baramati.

The presentation for same was held in front of the AESA Jury members on from varied fields visited the project on 2nd March 2024. It was assessed by an eminent jury consisting of architects engineers landscape architects & members from construction industry. The award function took place subsequently on Saturday 16th March 2024.

This projects have been curated by the team in the year 2022 under the guidance of :

Ar. Prasanna Desai attended the Get Set Cycle - a conference on all things bicycle ! organised by Parisar, Pune.

Ar. Prasanna Desai was invited to the panel discussion of Building Cycling friendly Cities along with Mr. Bapusaheb Gaikwad ( Executive Engineer, Traffic and Transportation Project Division, PCMC ) and Ar. Pranjal Kulkarni ( Deputy Manager, Healthy Streets & Compact Cities, ITDP ). The panel was moderated by Ar. Pranjali Deshpande ( Sustainable Mobility Professional ).

The panel discussion was a part of the day-long conference on cycling held on 30th March 2024 at S M Joshi Socialist Foundation, Navi Peth, Pune.

There was a very interesting discussion & deliberation wrt various topics as to which path one should take which was surely very useful for the students audience.

Prasanna Desai was invited as a guest speaker for the 2 day Capacity Building program "Shaping Mobility for Young Children and Caregivers" arranged by Urban Development Department of Maharashtra and organized by WRI India and Parisar, supported by Van Leer Foundation held on 23rd and 24th November 2023.

The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of city officials who are engaged in development of streets and public transport to improve the mobility experience for young children and their caregivers and achieve the vision of 'Inclusive Mobility' for Maharashtra. City Officials from different cities of Maharashtra had participated in the workshop. The workshop included topics like :

1. Understanding travel needs of young children and caregivers
2. Improve planning and design of street network
3. Enhance public transport for women and children
4. Develop children centric mobility plans for city

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Honoured by Bloomberg Initiative for Cycle Infrastructure

Pimpri Chinchwad, 2nd June 2023:

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is awarded the prestigious Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI) by New York based Bloomberg Philanthropies and Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI). The award was announced on the occasion of Word Bicycle Day, 3rd June 2023.

The project; (Preparation of Harit Setu Master Plan) aims at creating sustainable urban street design in the city of Pimpri Chinchwad. The project was selected as one of the top 10 entries, out of 275 participating applications from 66 countries. This is indeed a moment of pride for the city of Pimpri Chinchwad.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation along with various organizations and individuals, took efforts to prepare the proposal for the BICI Competition. The project is led by Mr. Shekhar Singh ( I.A.S ), PCMC Honorable Municipal Commissioner and will be executed by PCMC BRTS Department. The proposal was prepared under the guidance of Mr. Pramod Ombhase ( Jt. City Engineer ) and Mr. Bapusabheb Gaikwad ( Executive Engineer ) from BRTS Department and the proposal was designed by the urban design consultants Prasanna Desai Architects Pune, advised by Mr. Ashik Jain, PCMC Bicycle Mayor and Mr. Pranjal Kulkarni from ITDP, India. With the time constraint to design and execute the project, quick design decisions were the key factor to complete the project. A complete Fakki marking was carried out on-site, which helped us as well as the clients in understanding the space utilisation on ground level. A complete square grid was worked out on site for our reference as well as the design was worked out as per the grid itself making ex*****on smoother and more efficient.

After the completion of the 6-lane vehicular underpass grade separator on the busy BRTS corridor the resultant open space above was utilised mostly for parking and partly for cycling, skating and playing by the children from the residential area. The site was adjoining to the dense residential neighbourhood which was most appropriate to be converted into an active public realm.

Underutilized space on 6 lane vehicular grade separator at Sudarshan chowk, Pimple Gurav was transformed with the vision that would help getting people out from the screen to the sky in the vibrant public realm, using innovative concept to create integrated urban space for all age groups titled “8 to 80 park”. The site was adjoining to the neighbourhood lacking recreational facilities was most appropriate to be converted into an active public realm. This site was undertaken as a placemaking as well as junction development project.
Project envisaged as a destination space for the residents. Four towers (Clock Tower, Utility Tower, Sliding Tower and Viewing Tower) were conceived to give identity and character to the space. The activities like Skating & Skateboarding, Conventional floor games, children play area and jungle gym, Open gym, Leisure cm interactive seating space were designed to cater for children to senior citizens. To achieve shade with the limitation of planting trees being a concrete slab of the grade separator Tensile roof structures were proposed to provide shade above the seating alcoves as well as the edge. To provide adequate lighting for optimum use of the public space double arm light poles, footlights in stone seating, up down lighters for tensile structures were incorporated as well as a complete music system as an attachment to the poles was fixed which would add to the aura for the park

Under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs organised a competion on tactical urbanism and placemaking. The challenge was to take up an event or project which should be executed in 72 hours. Pimpri Chinchwad Smart City Limited selected one of the site located on a grade separator at Sudarshan chowk in Pimple Gurav. After the completion of the 6 lane vehicular underpass grade separator on the busy BRTS corridor the resultant open space above was utilised mostly for parking and partially for cycling, skating, playing by the children residing in the vicinity. The site was adjoining the neighbourhood with very few recreational urban spaces so it was appropriate to be converted into an active public realm. This site was undertaken as a placemaking as well as junction development project.

Ar. Prasanna Desai attended the meeting on introduction to the BIGRS - Pune, initiative to advance road safety held on 22nd November 2022, at Mauji Cafe, Bhoslenager, Pune.

The meeting was organized by Parisar, GDCI, and Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative for Global road safety. The focus of the meeting was on creating awareness about the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety ( BIGRS ) in Pune, in partnership with Global Designing Cities Initiative ( GDCI ).

The meeting was followed up by a detailed discussion with stakeholders, Civil Society OrganizationsCSOs), NGOs, and other organizations who are actively working in Pune.
