With the current high cost of living and the school closure most parents who are disabled or have children who have special needs are really facing hard times economically,socially and emotionally. With the climate change some are really facing health issues,this has led persons with disabilities to be more vulnerable to insecurity and threats like the following;
Household finances &debt-unable to cover bills and essentials.
Benefits and financial support- reduction in the value of income.
Effect on physical health and condition.
Emotional well-being and mental health eg stress and worrying about coping with increasing cost of living are taking their toll on the mental health of PWDs and their families.
Choices and sacrifices- many PWDs are making difficult choices like going to beg in the street with their children exposing them to risk like drugs leading to violence extremism.
In response to the above mentioned threats,
Amazing Group of Persons with Disabilities - CBO with the support from Youth Alive! Kenya held acapacity building training on mental health to pwds and parents at Mombasa likoni

Women and girls with disabilities are more vulnerable when it comes to leadership and advocacy because of lack of safe spaces, but when given the right safe spaces they make great leaders ,through the Kenya Network for women and girls with disabilities with the support they are getting from Ford Foundation On 24th November we managed to attend achief baraza at mwembe tayari it was a very productive engagement, the host Chief managed to mobilized for us other chiefs and more than 11 village elders from different villages in Mombasa county,he also mobiled CHVs and department of health services where we managed to share what we expect to see included on matters of health SRHR and leadership.
OUTCOMES
1)We emphasised that we need to see women with disabilities being given the opportunity in leadership. Eg chiefs, village leaders etc
2)We challenged the health leaders why they didn't engage pwds as CHvs
3)We shared more about the network and our capacities as individuals and groups and this really motivated their perception towards women with disabilities
5)We did disability mainstreaming and realised that one of the CHV also had a 15 year old girl who is pwd
6)All of us participated in saying aword or two.
7)Our guides did awonderful job by ensuring all of us reached the venue comfortably
8)Our teamwork led by our team lead Miriam was perfect.
9)The chief was so good to us and has a disability heart,he has always been at the front fighting those pretending to be disabled then begging on the streets of mombasa
WAYFORWARD
All the departments who came to the meeting including the community members promised and already they invited us to attend on of their activities next week
The chiefs requested if the network can help us do apress statement on the women pretending to be disables who are lowering our dignity and taking the opportunity they don't deserve
