PhD Position (m/f/d) in the area of Coastal Ocean Turbulence, deadline 31st May 2020.
The Institute of Coastal Research is investigating the influence of offshore wind farm structures on the dynamics of coastal seas. The interaction of tidal and coastal currents with the offshore wind farm foundation structures creates anthropogenic sources of turbulence that contribute to additional mixing and transport of buoyancy that can affect stratification levels. Primarily through the use of Large Eddy Simulations (LES), the candidate will investigate this mixing process with the aim of producing a parameterisation suitable for use in larger scale regional models. The work will contribute to our understanding of the response to offshore wind farm development in the German region of the North Sea. The project may also involve the collection of field data.
They invite applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) in the area of Coastal Ocean Turbulence; preferably starting as soon as possible. The position is limited to three years with the degree being awarded through the University of Hamburg.

This document explores the underlying cause of land-based plastic debris entering the marine environment, specifically production and consumption patterns of our economies. This includes the design and marketing of products without appropriate regard for their environmental fate or ability to be recycled, waste management infrastructure, inappropriate disposal, as well as the geographical separation between production in relatively developed economies, and consumption/disposal, which is global. In this document, the STAP proposes a revised framework in addressing plastic debris that advocates the use of the five R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Redesign and Recover) in a regional context. The document also has a number of specific recommendations for the GEF.
