On the same topic of Nuclear Financing, Mr. Andrew Worrall, Director for Nuclear Energy Programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory delivered an insightful presentation where he explained how the viability of nuclear projects is calculated by analyzing cash inflows & outflows over a period of time.
Day 2 of the US-AFRICA Nuclear Energy Summit workshop focused on nuclear financing.
Hon. Nana Menya Ayensu, Special Assistant to the President for Climate Policy, Finance, and Innovation at the White House Climate Policy Office, delivered a keynote address focused on the complexities and opportunities of financing nuclear energy projects.
He highlighted the roles of different financial stakeholders, including sponsors (who take on the most risk and focus on project profitability) and lenders (who are primarily concerned with ensuring repayment and minimizing downside risk). Ayensu also touched on the importance of grants and tax equity, particularly in the U.S., where tax equity plays a crucial role in offsetting project costs through tax credits.
Mr. Ayensu addressed the historical context of nuclear financing, noting that large-scale nuclear projects have traditionally been government-driven due to their high capital requirements and the bespoke nature of the engineering involved. However, recent innovations in project design, such as the development of smaller modular reactors (SMRs) and increased standardization, have opened the door for more commercial involvement.
Overall, Ayensu's address underscored the need for innovative financing models and the involvement of both government and private sector players to successfully navigate the financial challenges of nuclear energy projects.
