AFRIGIST, UL foster Collaboration

A two-man delegation from the African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST) based in Lagos, Nigeria has held talks with authorities of the University of Liberia on the prospect of introducing a Masters degree in Geography, Demography and Geo-Information Technology at the University of Liberia.

The Executive Director of AFRIGIST and head of the delegation, Dr. Adewale Akingbade underscored the importance of South-South cooperation for the provision of quality postgraduate programs in research, science and technology.

"Unless we foster collaboration among ourselves to meet specific needs of our respective countries nobody from different part of the world will do it for us", Dr. Akingbande stressed.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is expected to be developed and signed between AFRIGIST and the UL that subsequently allows the University of Liberia to benefit scholarships for students and faculty to pursue graduate and post graduate degrees in disciplines that are not readily offered at the UL

Since 1976, AFRIGIST has been providing training and mentorship in research at graduate and postgraduate levels to students and academics from more than 30 countries in Africa.

Also, AFRIGIST has trained at least eight Liberians who earned Master's degrees in different fields, some of whom are currently serving in different sectors including the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS).
