SUDDEN DEATH
Venous Thrombo Embolism (VTE)
A man admitted into hospital following a road traffic accident appeared to be making an excellent recovery. He was well-known locally and was chatting heartily with visitors one afternoon but by dusk he had died suddenly.
I observed this as a medical student and was shocked. I have since encountered similar cases involving relatives and colleagues of mine.
A doctor recovering from an operation that went well died unexpectedly while in hospital.
Another doctor died suddenly while recovering at home *with one leg in an orthopaedic plaster.*
A woman recovering smoothly from a brain operation was about to be discharged home when she suddenly died.
The clinical explanation for these deaths is
*Venous Thrombo-embolism (VTE).*
This is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombosis) forms in a vein. A chunk of this clot may break off and be carried in the blood stream to the lungs (this is called ‘Pulmonary Embolism ’, PE).
Immobilisation due to surgery or other medical conditions predisposes to clot formation. Obesity and genetic factors increase the risk but VTE could happen to anybody.
If the dislodged clot is large enough it will cause instant death. If it isn’t, there may be time to treat PE. If untreated, death will occur in most cases.
It is not only after a surgical operation that VTE may occur.
It can occur from prolonged immobilisation, as in
(1) long-distance travel - more than 4 hours by air or by road.
2) long period of bed rest in persons who are chronically ill.
Globally, venous thromboembolism (VTE) commands insufficient attention. This is regrettable because it carries a high mortality rate.
The best treatment is prevention.
This includes ambulation, hydration, use of compression stockings and blood-thinning injections. These measures have been shown to be very effective but under-utilised.
The first step towards reducing the number of deaths from thromboembolism is AWARENESS. Unfortunately awareness of VTE in Africa (as in many countries across the world) is low, among health professionals and the public at large.
Let us start today to raise awareness of VTE among Africans.

Together we can generate swirls of AWARENESS and, who knows, a life saved could be that of your parent, spouse, sibling, friend – or your own.

FACEBOOK JAILS ME BECAUSE OF MY BRAND NAME
Yesterday, Facebook restricted my account for 24hrs because I posted a comment to encourage a member, Chris Ejikeme in my group (SEE SLIDE 1).
Most of you know, I own a Facebook group called FatFightersNg. I also own a page with the same name, Fatfightersng. So members of are called, "F@tFighters".
I am compelled to alter the spelling of my brand name in any post from now henceforth. This is because Facebook says that my brand name supports bullying and harassment of its online community.
F@tFightersNg is a health and wellness brand for people who are committed to living a healthy lifestyle by eating natural healthy foods, increasing their physical activity and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle.
This brand name that has been trademarked with the Trademarks, Patents and Designs Registry in the Commercial Law Department of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment in Nigeria. My company's transaction ID is 201705301039349 (SEE SLIDE 5).
The brand name F@tFightersNg is also registered with the Coporate Affairs Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a full fledged legitimate business. It's BN Number is BN2947713 (SEE SLIDE 6).
After taking the trouble to register my brand/business through the proper channels. After building my business and online target market for years, Facebook is telling me that I cannot even mention my brand name because it could make a certain group of people feel bad.
It is a fact that obesity is one of the leading causes of Type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (where fatty deposits narrow your arteries), which can lead to coronary heart disease and stroke.
If I found a community of people who want to prevent or reverse these ailments by making certain lifestyle changes and encourage family and friends to do same, how is that a crime? How does it violate anything?
My brand does not f@t shame anyone. It simply promotes healthy lifestyle options to cater to those who need it.
I can't do sponsored ads because Facebook has a problem with my logo and captions.
In 2019, I had a feeling my brand had been blacklisted on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp Business. These are all Zuckerberg apps.
I relayed my fears to a few friends and told them that I no longer had business visibility on these apps. I also made plans to change my brand name and logo.
The new brand name has been ready but the funds have not been available to do the paperwork to effect legal changes.
I received a warning yesterday that our group will be closed down if we continue to refer to ourselves as F@tFighters. That is bullying on Facebook's part (SEE SLIDE 4).
They can't knock me down. No matter what, I will keep resurrecting like the Phoenix: bigger, stronger and better.

I love this coffee.
I wake up looking forward to it's therapeutic aroma every morning.
It's a Tesco brand Irish coffee and it sold for N1,390 at Ebeano. This low price was practically a steal for this quality of coffee.
As an ulcer patient addicted to coffee, Stockwell coffee does not irritate my intestines. It also does not give me the jitters even if I drink several cups a day.
I drink it with milk and stevia. I drink it as iced coffee. I add it as a flavouring for making coffee greek yoghurt. It's aroma is nicely intense.
I am currently down to my third jar.

Thick girl problems.
On my walk this morning, I heard a sound coming from below.
Praaaa...ra..ra..ra!!!
I looked down. My leggings had split down the middle exposing my inner thigh.
Mogbe!!🙆♀️
What do I do? I was in the middle of nowhere. I quickly took off my hoodie and tied the sleeves part around my waist to cover the tear.
I kept walking. Next thing, I felt the flesh there burning. The friction from my thighs was causing a terrible bruise.
I pulled out one of my sock and padded the rip to protect my flesh.
That's how I started walking like somebody with "kobo leg" (bow legs) until I got home.
Las, las...I still fought the fat. Clocked in 10km.
Shea butter has been applied on the bruise. It looks better.

I deal with pain differently. I rise above it and live my best life.
Been down with ulcer pain for about four days now. It was triggered by a meal of native rice and beans (see slide 4). I had completely forgotten that my intestines are irritated by beans.
Today, I decided to rise above it. Took a two hour brisk walk and clocked in 13,032 steps.
I feel alive.
Four years ago, I was in a bad place.
My health was quite poor. It was the type of health condition that when you tell people about it, they don't take it seriously because it doesn't sound "serious" enough to be of grave concern.
But it was slowly killing me. It was killing my brand and robbing me of my quality of life.
Nothing I ate seemed to settle in my stomach. I'd watch my family eat but I dare not join them or I wouldn't be able to sleep that night.
Heart burn. Acid reflux. Food will regurgitate up my throat like a ruminant animal and sometimes threaten to spill out of my nostrils. My intestines would burn like I drank acid and constrict like a demon was wringing the life out of them.
On top of that, all my joints seemed to be on fire. My knees, ankles, heels, neck, lower back and sometimes my wrists.
I hated my life. There were mornings I didn't want to get out of bed. Exercise was out of the question. I couldn't function past the pain. I felt miserable.
I didn't notice when the weight started piling until I climbed the scale one day and boom! I had gone from 87kg to 120kg!
I couldn't climb stairs. I couldn't climb anything without my knee making a popping sound. I couldn't squat. I couldn't wear high heeled shoes; just flip flops and well padded sneakers.
I remember looking at my high heeled shoes one day and wondering if I'll ever get to wear them again.
I started walking outdoors.
I eliminated every food on my menu and ate mostly foods that improved gut health and aided proper digestion.
That's why I eat a lot of yoghurt for gut health and the calcium; and fermented foods. I also eat more plant based foods. My animal protein is basically "Ovo-Pescaterian", (Eggs and sea food).

Last Friday, I dusted out this old Michael Kors heels to wear. I found that I could strut perfectly in them. I could bend and flex my knees in any direction without any pain.

If you snore, you’re not alone: Up to half of all American adults snore. It happens when air flows through your throat when you breathe in your sleep. This causes the relaxed tissues in your throat to vibrate and cause harsh, irritating snoring sounds.
Snoring may disrupt your sleep, or that of your partner. Even if it’s not bothering you too much, it’s not a condition to ignore. In fact, snoring may be a sign of a serious health condition, including:
obstructive sleep apnea (blocked airways)
obesity
an issue with the structure of your mouth, nose, or throat
sleep deprivation.
In other cases, snoring may be caused simply by sleeping on your back or drinking alcohol too close to bedtime.

In some cases of snoring, it’s important to seek a doctor’s care in order to get the medical treatment you need to address the underlying condition.
Cases of snoring caused by benign factors — like sleep position — can often be treated with simple home remedies.
Here are 15 remedies commonly used to treat snoring and its various causes:
1. Lose weight if you are overweight.
This will help reduce the amount of tissue in the throat that might be causing your snoring. You can lose weight by reducing your overall caloric intake by eating smaller portions and more healthy foods. Make sure you get regular exercise daily. You may also consider seeing your doctor or a nutritionist for help.
2. Sleep on your side.
Sleeping on your back sometimes causes the tongue to move to the back of the throat, which partly blocks airflow through your throat. Sleeping on your side may be all you need to do to allow air to flow easily and reduce or stop your snoring.
3. Raise up the head of your bed.
Elevating the head of your bed by four inches may help reduce your snoring by keeping your airways open.
4. Use nasal strips or an external nasal dilator.
Stick-on nasal strips can be placed on the bridge of the nose to help increase the space in the nasal passage. This can make your breathing more effective and reduce or eliminate your snoring.
You could also try a nasal dilator, which is a stiffened adhesive strip that’s applied on top of the nose across the nostrils. This can decrease airflow resistance, making it easier to breath.
Try nasal strips to help reduce snoring.
5. Treat chronic allergies.
Allergies can reduce airflow through your nose, which forces you to breathe through your mouth. This increases the likelihood that you’ll snore. Talk to your doctor about what kind of over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications may improve your condition.

6. Correct structural problems in your nose.
Some people are born with or experience an injury that gives them a deviated septum. This is the misalignment of the wall that separates both sides of the nose, which restricts airflow. 7. Limit or avoid alcohol before bed.
Try not to consume alcohol for at least two hours leading up to your bedtime. Alcohol can relax the throat muscles, causing snoring.
8. Avoid taking sedatives before bed.
If you snore and take sedatives, talk to your doctor to see what your options are. Stopping sedative use before bed may ease your snoring.
9. Stop smoking.
Smoking is an unhealthy habit that can worsen your snoring. Talk to your doctor about therapies — such as gum or patches — that can help you quit.
10. Get enough sleep.
Make sure you get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep you need each night.
11. Use an oral appliance.
Dental mouthpieces called “oral appliances” can help keep your air passages open, making it easier for you to breathe. This prevents snoring. You need to see your dentist to get one of these devices made.
12. Use a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine.
If medically appropriate, wearing a pressurized air mask over your nose when you sleep can help keep your airway open. This treatment is often recommended to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
13. Wear palatal implants.
Also called the “pillar procedure,” this treatment involves injecting braided strands of polyester filament into your mouth’s soft palate. This stiffens it to reduce snoring.
14. Get UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty).
This type of surgery tightens throat tissue in the hopes it will reduce snoring. Laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LAUPPP), which is sometimes more effective than UPPP, is also available.
15. Radiofrequency tissue ablation (somnoplasty).
This new treatment uses low-intensity radio waves to shrink the tissue on your soft palate to reduce snoring.
